[PHB TBBSS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, October 20, The City Council have refused to take a poll of the burgesses on the question or bringing into operation or otherwise the Contagious Diseases Act. At yesternight’s meeting several Councillors expressed the opinion that legal proceedings should be taken against a so-called religious paper for printing an obscene advertisement intended as a skit on the Act. Sir George Grey has promised a further gut of old manuscripts to the Auckland Library. WELLINGTON, October 20. Captain William Callow, the owner and captain of the well known trading schooner Saucy Lass, died rather auddouly lost night, it is supposed from heart disease, HAVELOCK, October 20. Hr John McDowell's house at Kaituna Valley, six and a half miles from Havelock, was burnt to the ground at four o’clock this morning. The fire was occasioned by the bursting of kerosene. The children were rescued, but the furniture was all burnt, although assistance was at hand. The building was alone insured for £l6O. PATEA, October 20. The Harbor Board having been brought to book at a publio meeting for alleged apathy in the matter of improving the river entrance, a general resignation is imminent, the chairman and one member having already resigned. DUNEDIN, October 20. The Qreymouth Coal Company have decided to raise the price of coal to 12s per ton, f.0.b., from No. 1, being an increase of Is per ton. In the District Court, Henry Wilson recovered .£2OO damages from George and Mary Clark for loss of his eye. Defendant’s wife threw a fork at her husband, bat it struck plaintiff, a lad. A slight shock of earthquake was felt here about noon to-day.
