HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
An ordinary meeting of this Board took place yesterday afternoon at four o’clock. Present—The Hon. B. O. J, Stevens, Hr H. Thomson (in the chair), the Mayor of Lyttelton, Mr Hawkes, and Dr. Trias. An apology for absence was received from the Mayor of Sydenham and of Christchurch. Letters were read from the chairman of the Hospital staff, recommending that, with regard to the desirableness of appointing a physician for the disease* of women and children, nothing should be done until after the annual election in December next. The Board agreed with the anggestion of the chairman of the staff, and the matter was postponed for the present. From the home steward, pointing out that the cooking and heating apparatus of the Hospital were nearly worn out, and recommending the ranges, Ac., of a certain manufacturer for adoption and introduction as soon as possible. In the course of a discussion it was shown that with the present dilapidated appliances great waste of fuel was going on, and considerable risk from fire and explosion of boilers was constantly experienced. It was resolved that the district engineer ba communicated with for the purpose of obtaining plans and estimates for a new kitchen cooking apparatus, &j., such plans to bo afterward* submitted to the Government. In reference to the performance* of the City Guards Band within the grounds of the Hospital on one afternoon per week, the Board saw no objection, provided certain rules were observed as to the admission of the public, and the right of veto by the house surgeon. The matter was loft in the hands of the committee. An application from Mr Longh, Timarn, asking for greater remuneration for hi* services in connection with the Board, was endorsed by the Board resolving to recommend the Government to increase his salary by £ls per annum. The Hospital committee reported that during the fortnight ending 14th October twentyfour patients were admitted into the Hospital and eighteen were discharged, leaving sixtyseven patients in the institution. During the period there were two deaths. For the corresponding period of last year the number of patients was sixty-eight. There were five patients in Akaroa Cottage Hospital, and none in Lyttelton Casual Ward. The report from the Ashburton Old Mon*’ Home stated that there are at present thirty - nine inmates of that institution. Tenders were reported for repairs to the Armagh street depot, and that of J. Pointer, at £49, was accepted. A sum of £2 8s 6i, which had been deposited in the Orphanage donation box at the Custom House, Lyttelton, was ordered to be bonded to the master of the Orphanage, to be placed to the credit of the harmonium fund. The Orphanage committee reported that they hod inspected the Orphanage buildings at 'Lyttelton on Thursday last, end they reooommeaded that the suggestions proposed in the letter from the master, under date October 9tb, be adopted. The committee found that the building required painting, and that several repairs were urgently needed. They suggested therefore that the district engineer should be requested to be good enough to send an officer from hie department to examine the building and prepare a report and estimate of the work necessary to be done, and that on the receipt of this report and estimate a letter be addressed to the Hon. the Colonial Secretary, asking the sanction of the Government to the expenditure. The report wag adopted. After dealing with some charitable aid cases, the Board adjourned.
