Tho Synod sat at 4 p.m., at which hour the President took the chair.

The Dean apologised for non-attendance at opening of session of Messrs Whitefoord and Porter.

Major Beinfield presented s petition from several members of the Church of England, residents in Caledonian Road, asking for a severance of the parish of St. Matthew's from St. Luke’o and the formation of a separate parish, and moved that the petition be received.

Sir O. B, Blakiatou presented a counter petition from St. Luke's. The petition presented by Major Bamfield was received andjread, after a discussion on a point of order. On the motion of Mr C. R. Blskiston, the counter petition from tho parish of 6t. Buko was received and read, stating that while agreeing with the necessity of a re-adjust-ment of boundaries, the parishioners of St. Luke desired to dissent from tho alleged probability of a financial success stated by tho petition first read. They did so because they desired not to be liable in case of failure for financial assistance to tho new parish, or to the oharge of having tacitly agreed thereto. The petitioners prayed that the prayer of the petitioners bo not acceded to. Mr 11. I-;. Webb present*do petition from certain church members residing at Fendaltown, asking that a separate pariah should be constituted there out of the parishes of Papanui and Hiscartoa.

After EOme discussion on a point of order raised by Mr C. R. Blakiatou, the petition was received and road.

At tho request of tho R:v. E. A. Liugaid, tho number of signatures to the petition of St, Matthew’s, Caledonian road, was stated as being forty, and those on that from St. Luke’s thirty-four. Mr Malet brought up tho report of the Diocesan Clergy Reunion Fuad, which was read.

Canon Cottcrill brought np the report of tho Cathedral Chapter, and moved that it f.e read. Ho stated that abstracts of the different accounts would bo ready for laying before the Synod at next sitting. On the of MrMalet, tho mo ion standing in the namo of the Doan was postponed in order to allow of thosa for appointing select committees to be moved. Mr E, J. T. Ford moved —1. "That in ocoordanoe with tho suggestion of ths Ohuu-.h Property Trustees, n Select Committee be appointed to consider tho system of Je..ec termed the Glasgow lease, and if it be cor ■idered expedient to adopt it generally, with vh&t modifications, if any.” 2, “That the

committee consist of tbe following members : —The Hon. H. B. .Grecian, Messrs Hii*» greaves, Malct, Harman, Meares, L. Harper, and the mover. ”

Mr W. H. Hargreaves recorded the motion.

Mr Maid suggested that the mover cbonul agree to the committee being increased t» nine.

Mr Ford agreed to this being done,

Mr Malct then moved tfco incrosce of the committee to nine, and the addition of tho names of Messrs W. J. W. Hamilton and Tanored. The Rev. H. 0. M. Watson seconded the motion, which was put and carried, and the original motion, as amended, put and agretd to.

Mr Willes moved—l. “ That a Select Committee bo appointed to consider in what manner permanent provision may be made for the maintenance of tho Oathe-lrl services.” 2. “ Tbe committee to eonsiet t.f the following nine persons :—Tho Dear of Christchurch, Arahdeue.m Harris, Rsv. C. Bowen, Messrs Hirman, Malct, Palter K. Chapman, L. Harper, and tbe mover.”

Mr G. Mclntyre second-.d the motion

The Rev. E. A. Lingard contended that it was only fair to the Christchurch parishes that the debt of £IOOO an the organ should bo provided for in tho schema, so that the parishes would not be called upon to contribute towards this debt. Ho would suggest the addi.ion after tho wards “maintenance of tho Cathedral services ” of tbe following, viz : —“ And to provide far the payment of £IOOO, os a debt on the organ." The Dean pointed cut that to take tha debt due on the organ oat of the Dean or.d Chapter estate was illegal. Mr Malet wished to suggest that. t>.,» question of tha maintenance of the Oath ad -3 school should also bo referred to this con.mitteo, as if they wore going to keep u - rl s Cathedral services they must have a sf-huoi to train choristers. He might a*y tha 5 no. did not agree with tho Dean as to the illegality of taking tho amount dna cn the organ out of the Dean and Chapter After a discussion, in whieh Revs, H. C. M. Watson, Bowen, Mortimer, Arcndiiact-a Harper, and Messrs Mtars and Mf.noe took part. Rev. H. C. M. Watson suggested the addition of the names of Rev. Cholmondaley, Archdeacon Harper, Canon Cotterill, Me;»n Tancrod and C. R. Blakiston.

Mr Parker suggested the addition oi the name of Canon Stanford.

The Synod then proceeded to ballot for nine oat of the following name*, via • Dean of Christchurch, Archdeacons U-irris and Harper, Canon* Stanford, Ootl still, Oholmondeley, Bev. O. Bowen, Ms Mrs Tanored, Harman, Blskiston, Malot, Parker, B. Chapman, L. Harper, and Wilke. The adjournment hour of 6.30 p.m. arrived whilst the result of the ballot was being ascertained, and the Synod adjourned till 7.30 p.m. On resuming, the result of the ballot was declared as follows:—The Tery Bev. the Dean, the Yen. Archdeacon Harris, the Bor. O. Bowen, Messrs Harman, Malet, Parker, 81. Chapman, L, Harper, and W. Wilks. The Dean moved—“ That, in accordance with the recommendation of the standing committee, the stipend of the diocfian secretary, which for the last sixteen years h-s been represented by the income attached to a Oanonry of the Cathedral, be provided from the commencement of the current fiaunc »1 year from the Diocesan general fund."

The Bev. O. Bowen did not think it was desirable to adopt the coarse proposed, as the Diocesan fund was not in a position t> bear the charge.

Archdeacon Harris opposed, and M* Malet supported the motion. The Kev. Mr Lingard would like the h'ynod to adopt the resolution, ns tic holder of the office having performed the duties for many years should be paid from some source, and his functions as diocesan secretary had nothing to do with the Chapter. A discussion ensued in which. the following gentlemen took part:— The Eev. Mr P»eooo, Mr Hargreaves, Hon. Mr Ac'.and, Mess-.s R. J. T. Ford, J. E. Parker, W. J. VV. Hamilton, and Geo. Mclntyre. The Dean having replied, the SrnoS divided—Ayes—Clergy, 13 ; laity, 15. Nona —Clergy, 21 ; laity, 10. Thu motion was, therefore, lost.

The Dean moved—“ That it is desirablo that the proceeds of the Addington endowment, given by W. T. Locke Travers, Esq., for the education of orphan girls, amounting at the present time to an annual inooma of £SO, with accumulations amounting to £2OO, be placed at the disposal of the committee of the Church Work Society for the purpose of establishing, at such time and in such placo in the city of Christchurch as they may determine, a Chnroh day school fer girl*, provided that orphan girls be admitted free of charge under such regulations as may be deemed expedient. 1 ’ There was a felt want in the community for a school to which the working classes onld send their girls eo that they might obtain religious instruo ion. and there were objections to sending girls to the large Government schools. Fees would ba charged, except to orphan children. Ho would ask leave to amend the motion by inserting after the worda “ Church Work Society ” the words ” for a term of five years.”

After a short discussion the motion war postponed for further information.

The Dean moved— *• That the resolution entitled ‘ Marriage licenses for marriage s in Cathedral ’ {see Synod Report, 1831, pago 93), be rescinded, and that tho following be substituted for it—‘ That in the opinion of this Synod it is desirable that the cost of a marriage license for a marriage to be solemnised in the Cathedral ba £lO, except in the following cases, in which the Synod is ct opinion that tbo usual charge should ba made, viz.—the marriage of any member of the Cathedral Chapter, that of a son or daughter, or grandson or grand-daughter of the Bijuop of the diocese, or that of a son cr daughter of any member of tho Chapter. And that the Bishop ba respectfully requested togiveefiect to this resolution, ”

The Her. C. Bowen seconded, and would ask the Dean to include the organ blcwcr. [Laughter.) At any rate he would plesd for the Cathedral officers —the verger* end others. He would suggest that the motion should be amended to this eSect, “except in the case of the members of the Chapter and tho *taS of tho Cathedral and their families.”

iho President said ho wan’d object to the resolution unless all the words after “ Cathedral Chapter ’’ were struck cut, leaving the last two lines. He would certainly wish hie sons P.nd daughters to ba married in the parish to which they belonged, t-r if they wer a married at the Cathedral that they should pay tho fees. Mr A. O. Wilson proposed, ni r.a amendment —“ That tho Synod now proceed to the next order of the day.”

The Dean, aster tlie remarks of the Bishop, would ask perir.tsjion to withdraw his resolution.

Motion withdrawn. The Rev. Canon diocesan secretary, made a statement in accordanco with the resolution of Synod at the last annual session showing how it was proposed to provide for tho payment of moneys that might be required for the work of the church uniing the ensuing jeer, and moved tho following resolution s—‘’That in tho prospect of the increased income o! the Church property trust estate, it is not desirable to make s prr rata deduction in the grants made to parishes, Ac., and in tho long service {-.rt .l*, notwithstanding the present insufficient income of the estate.” Mr Malat seconded.

Mr Hargreaves, while prepared to vote for the resolution, thought that instead of sn increase, the accounts would show a deficit of £-100, and it was a question whether they had better anticipate tho revenue us proposed, or whether the clergy should c.naei t to a prerata deduction. After seme discussion as fcc- the state of tho account, the debate vac adjourned until Friday n- it. Mr Malat obtained loam to briny {•-. r. Bill to amend tho financial regulations for the collection and management of diocesan funds for tho maintenance of the clergy.

Tho Bill was read n first time. Attar a number of notices of motion w*-rt given, the Synod adjourned until the following day.
