[PSa PBUM ABBOOIATIOH.j AUCKLAND, Octobers, The Sydney football team have left for Sydney. A private cable has been received announcing the death of the Eev. Samuel Edgar, of Auckland, at London. He went Home to undergo a surgical operation by Sir Henry Thompson. Richard Polkinghorn and Adam Bmrll, the victims of the notorious Wade smuggling case, have received £IOO each from _ the Government a* compensation for the imprisonment they had suffered and the expense they were put to. A meeting of the clergy and others was held to devise means for establishing a reformatory and home for fallen women. There is £220 in hand and land in trust valued at £IOOO.
Lyttle has been re-arrested on a charge of bigamy. At the criminal sessions George Grey, for, cattle stealing, was found guilty, and judgment reserved. John Gordon, for unlawfully wounding his wife, was sentenced to two months with hard labor. John Leydon, the well-known auctioneer at the Thames, for unlawfully wounding, was acquitted. In the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, J. A. Douglas, proprietor of Brunswick Store, was fined £2, including costs, for assaulting James Camp, the proprietor of the Tamahere Hotel. Ho was also bound to keep the peace for six months in the sum of £2O.
The captains of vessels are troubled with refractory seamen. The barque Bspido, for London, is at anchor unable to sail. Ont of twelve seamen only one was forthcoming, whom the police arrested and put on board by order of the Magistrate. NAPIBB, October 5.
At the inquest on the body of Derrant, who was killed returning from the races on Tuesday, the following verdict was returned: —“ The jury are unanimous in blamingthe railway authorities for not haring sufficient supervision on the day deceased wen killed.” With reference to the totalisator dispute on Tuesday, the stewards of the Jockey Club have officially stated their dissatisfaction with the working of the machine?, and intimated their intention of making other arrangements in future. James Gifford Bluett, of Leeston; John Charles Bell and Wm, Davidson, both of Ashburton ; (Alexander Lanes McGregor, of Akaroa; George Bedford, of Courtenay; Thomas Revel), of Christchurch. As no suspicious circumstances have been discovered in connection with the recent fire ou Lambton Quay, it has been decided not to hold a coroner’s enquiry. The first Poultry and Dog Show held in Wellington opened this afternoon. The entries in each class were numerous, and there was a good attendance of the public during the day. The charge of conspiracy against James Jonathan Adams and his daughter occupied the Supreme Court all day, and will probably conclude to-morrow afternoon.
The Union Company have agreed to issue return tickets at single rates to the wives o' the competitors visiting the New Zealand Rifle Association meeting at Dunedin next month.
TIMAEU, October 5. Thomas E. Lyle was charged at the Magistrate’s Court this morning with arson in connection with the recent fire at his jeweller’s shop. Ho was remanded till Monday. The body of a man named Archibald Maoint.yro, who has been missing since Monday evening last, was found in the Washdyke Creek to-day. An inquest will be held. DUNEDIN, October 5.
The Harbor Board Tenants held a meeting to-day and carried resolutions setting forth the injustice done to them by the railway passenger station buildings not being proceeded with, as was understood when they purchased the leases, and agreeing to urge on fcho Government the speedy prosecution of the work.
