ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Monday evening, there being present—his Worship the Mayor, and Or»» Friedlander, Harrison, Ivess, Bird, Nelson, J. Orr, A. Orr, Roberte, and St. Hill. The Mayor stated that the result of the election to fill the vacancies caused by the retirement of MessTs Bullock, Friedlander and Parkin, had resulted in tha return of Messrs B» Friedlander (re-eleoted), Nelson, and A. Orr, and that the result of the election should be matter of congratulation to the Council. The present overdraft tt the Back wis £774 18s 2d, and the total receipts since lajt Hireling wss £133 9 s 6d. Correspondence was read from Mr B. G. Wright, M.H.8., re forwarding to the Government copies of resolutions passed by the Borough and County Councils advocating the necessity of appointing a resident rcagistrato for Ashburton* From, the Department of Juitice re completing works round Court-house, stating matter would reocive attention. From Jobs Coutts, suggesting the formation and shingling of footpath on the north side of Grey street. Beferred to the engineer. From Messrs Bullock, Friedlander Bros., and_ W. Anderson, asking permission to make right-of-way through sections 93, 94 and 95. Peimission grauted. Letters were also read from the Land Registry <_ ffico re reserve 774, said from the County Council acknowledging receipt of resolution re resident rnagistrateThe engineer's report was read, and the clauses dealt with seriatim. The latter clause referred to some asphalting reoontiy j laid down in front cf Messrs Friediandei Bros.' new buildings, the complaint being that the regulation levels had OGt becic adhered to. A lengthy but not altogether amicable diefuesfcn ensued, an'J ultimately it w£.s resolved tfcet Messrs Friedlander Bros. be requested to re by the asphslte aud lowci ths footpath to its proper level. Messrs Nolscn and A. Orr were appointed to fiil the vacancies on the various committees rendered vacant by the retirement of Messrs fiuliuck slid Farkio. It was resolved that notices be nerved on owners of property having gorse fences projscting over the footpaths. Tht> engineer's attention was directed to the en* croachmen* of certain verandah posts in East street, and he was requested to report at next meeting. The engineer was also instructed to execute certain repairs to footpaths in Moore street. A carrier's l'conse was granted to F. McKenzio. After passing accounts the Council adjourned.
