YOUNG MEN'S CLUB.
A special meeting of the oommittee of the Young Men's Club Association was held at the City Council Chambers last evening. Pre„ent —His Worhip the Mayor of Ohristchurch (in the chair), the Very Bev. the Dean, Ven. Archdeacon Harris, Bev. O. Fraser, Messrs Malcolm, March, Hogben, Levy, and Griffiths (hon. seo.) The Daan reported that he had been present at a meeting of the directors of the Metropolitan Hotel that afternoon, when it had been resolved to let to the association two large rooms at a rental of 12j 6i per week, to be open from 7to 10 p.m. each evening. He went on to describe the situation of the rooms, whioh he said were as well suited to the purposes of the association as oould be expected ; one to be used as a class room, the other as a reading, ohess room, &c. Mr Malcolm said that the rooms were very suitable for their requirements. It was resolved that the rooms be taken, the tenure to commence from Monday, the 18th inst., the rooms to bo opened on that ate.
It waa further resolved, " That gome of the committee should attend at the roams on the opening night, and for some time afterwards, to rfcr.ive visitors; and that, betides advortisiDg the intention or the committee, posters should be exhibited throughout tho town." A form of advertisement was agreed upon, and Mr Griffiths, Mr March, and Mr Malcolm, as a sub-committee, undertook to take charge of the rooms and receive enrolments duriDg the week. Arrangements were made for the printing of tickatß, Sco., for members. Archdeacon Harris suggested that steps should at onee bo taken to procure the establishment of athletic exercises. He thought that the Board of Eiuoation might be moved to allow the club, when formed, to use the gymnasium in Kilmore street, belonging to the Normal School. It was described to be one of tho most oomplete establishments of the kind south of the Line.
The Bov. Mr Frasor thought the Board would not have any insuperable objection to further in that direction the objecia of the olub.
The aub-committee were authorised to expend the small sum required for preliminary expenses. It waa mentioned that Mr Merton had promised his services in the formation of a singing class. Archdeacon Harris moved that application be made to the Board of Ednoation for the use, oa one night in eaoh week between tho hours of seven and ten, of the gymnasium at the Normal school, and that inquiries be made as to the terms on which Mr Walker would give less jns in athletics to the members of the olub. Tho motion was eeoonded and carried. It was thought advisable also that in due time the committees of the schools which have baths attached to them, might be approached with tho view of obtaining the uso of the baths for the members of the olub. Tho oommittee were requested to interview Mr Btanaell, and to ask his 00-operation in giving musical instruction. It was resolved that the oommittee support the Hagley Park bathing committee in improving and utilising the bathing place. Mr Hogben expressed his willingness to give his services on one evening per week in the oonduot of a olass for elocution. It was resolved to ask Mr Malcolm to undertake the formation of classes for instruction in arithmetic and physioal geography, ar.d Mr Blair to deliver a short course of lectures in the rooms of the olub. The cortmittee afterwards adjourned till Thursday evening, Septemb&r 14th, at halfpast seven. ___^______
