Stealing a Mat.—Thomas Hardy waii brought up on remand from Wednesday charged with stealing a sheepskin mat, valued at 103. Eliz ibeth Smith, residing in Armagh street, deposed that the mat belonged to her. On Monday evening last she hung it out to dry. It might have dropped from the line into a narrow right-of-way, whioh was, howover, quite private; no stranger had any business there. Constable Bobson stated that on Monday night he found ond arrested the prisoner in the porch of a door belonging to Dr. Deamer, in Armagh straet. He was lying on the mat now produced. In defence the prisoner stated that the mat had been plaoed ia the porch by some other person. There were several previous oonviotionj against him. He was sentenced to be imprisoned for one month, to be kept at hard labor.

Stbahkg A Watoh. —James Keafe, alias O'Hearn, Ryan, or Cockney Jim, was charged with stealing a watoh and chain,'valued at £9 17a 6d, the property of Edward Mullans. H. Paynter, assistant of Mr Stewart's, pawnbroker, Liohfield street, deposed that the prisoner had pawned the watoh and chain produced for £1 5s at Mr Stewart's shop. Afterwards Deteotiv* Tools, y brought to the shop a man named Mullanc, who claimed the watoh produoed as his property. Sergeant Mason Btated that the owner of the watoh had gone to Hokitika, and asked for a remand for eight days. The remand was granted till September 16fch.
