LONDON, August 3. The Australian cricketers commenced a match to-day at Clifton against an eleven of Gloucestershire. The weather during the day was fine, and the ground was in good order, and a capital wicket was pitched. The Home team went in first. Messrs E. M. and W. F. Grace were the first to face the bowling of the Australians, but neither batsmen made a stand, Mr W. G. Grace being soon bowled for 12 and Mr E. M. Grace was caught for 11. Owing to the excellent bowling of Garrett the wickets fell rapidly, and with the exception of Messrs Moborly and W. K. Gilbert and Midwinter, none of the other batsmen were able to secure double figures. The Eleven were disposed of for a total of 108. The bowling throughout was dead on the wicket, and the fielding was excellent. Both were much admired by the spectators. The Australians commenced their innings by sending in Bannerman and Massie ; both made a fair stand, but Banuermau was at length bowled for 26, and Massie was caught when ho had put together a well played 29. Murdoch was bowled when he had contributed 17. McDonnell made a splendid stand, and succeeded in scoring 70 before he was bowled. Giffea and Palmer only succeeded in putting together 1 and 5, and when the latter was bowled the play was stopped for the day, Horan being still in with 34 to his credit.
August 4. The cricket match between the Australian Eleven and the Oounty of Gloucester was resumed to-day at Clifton. There was a very large attendance, and the weather was fine. The Australians, with 191 runs to their credit, and with six wickets down, continued their first innings. Horan, being not out with 34, was joined by Bonnor at the wickets. They made a good stand, and Bonnor contributed 33 before he was caught. Blackham, Boyle, and Garrett in turn joined Horan, who was batting splendidly, and finally carried out his bat for 141. Blaokham made a welt played 43, and Boyle and Garrett contributed 39 and 33 respectively. The innings closed for a total of 450, After the usual adjournment, the Gloucester Eleven went in for their second innings, Messrs W. G. and and B.M, Grace taking their places at the wickets. The former batted in good form, and was still in for 55 when the stamps were drawn. With the exception of Moberley, with 25 ; E. M. Grace, with 18 ; and Townsend, with 18, none of the other batsmen scored double figures. When play was stopped for the day, the Home team had scored 130 for the loss of five wickets.
