Tho question of the nentrality of the Suez Canal is now heing discussed by the Conference of the European Ambassadors. At to-day's sitting the Italian representative proposed that the Great Powers should co-operate with a view to the establishment of a collective naval protection. It is not known whether this course has been adopted by the Conference.
ALEXANDRIA, Amgust 2.
The Naval Brigade has been landed from ihe British fleet, and has occupied a position near this city in force. This movement has been taken in consequence of the attitude of the Bedouin Arabs, who are massing in the neighbourhood of Lake Mareotis and threatening the city, and whose advance it has been found neces3ary to check. A party of Bedouin irregulars advanced against the British lines at Ramleh, and succeeded in surprising the pickets. The outposts were driven in and retreated in disorder, but returned on the arrival of reinforcements from camp, when the Arabs fled, and the affair proved a bloodless one.
[" ARGUS " SPECIAL.] LONDON, August 2. The repulee of the British picket is unfounded.
It is reported tbit Arabi Pasha is shooting the Loyalists at Cairo. Official information states that Russia deprecates isolated action, and hopes that England will co-operate with the Conference.
Sir Garnet "Wolsoley has started for Egypt. Greek troops have occupied a Turkish village in Arts, and an explanation has been demanded by the Porte.
• [" AGE "- SPECIAL.] LONDON, August 2, 4.46 p.m. A British picket was roated by tk» enemy near Ramleh. Thirty-three vessels have been chartered at Bombay for the transport of troops, and the forces under Major-General McPhereon, Y.C., are now embarking.
