EXECUTION OF WINIATA.

When called upon this morning, Winiata stepped out of his cell and walked f-mly towards the scaffold, nodding to the Sheriff and spectators. The Bev. Mr Wallis, who has been with him since the trial, ascended the soaffold with the murderer, aid repeated prayers for the dying. Winiata said :—"Friends, Europeans, I am going to givo my body to be killed. Listen to me all of you—my hands did not kill that European; this is the end of my body. I have now a word to say to God." Baising his eyes to Heaven, he continued—" I am delivering my soul into Thy hands ; remember me when I come into Thy kingdom. This is all I have to say." The cap was then adjusted over his head, and i on a signal from the Sheriff the executioner drew 'the bolt. The scaffold was so con--1 structed that immediately the bolt was drawn

the criminal disappeared from the sight of the spectators/ all the lower portion of the scaffold being hoarded up. On examination, hii neck waa found to hare been broken, the nead hanging bank. The doctor states that signs of life were visible for sight minutes. After hanging half an hour the body was ' taken down and placed in a coffin at the foot of the scaffold, when a formal inquest was held. NO person claims the body. The coroner ordered it to be .buried within the' precincts of the gaol. The executioner was a convict, about twenty.four years of age, of abort stature and stout build. He is .said to have executed Hiroki, Walsh, and Ah Lee, in thia colony, and three murderers in New South Wales.
