[Per b.b. City of Sydney, at Auckland.] MELBOURNE, July 13
Fawcett, the defaulting accountant of the Sydney branch of the Mutual Life Assurance of Victoria was brought before the city bench and remanded, pending the issue of an extradition warrant.
SIDNEY, July 13. To-day, Colonels Beratohley, Christie and Spalding visited Bars Island, Botany Bay, to inspect tho fortifications in progress there, A letter, addressed to Mr Layard, British Consul, Noumea, from Captain Wain of the schooner Jabbeworck, shows that the French Government sent instructions to suspend the present labor recruiting ou the islands for New Caledonia. Messrs Willis have been advised that the barque Victoria, coal laden, from Newcastle to Launceston, was totally wrecked on Waterhouse Island on the 2nd inst.
NEWCASTLE, July 13
The Ministerial party arrived fromßoggubi and examined the shipping and other appliances of the harbor. After visiting the hydraulic cranes on Bullock islands, and making a trip round the harbor, the party returned to town.
