ELECTRIC LIGHT COMPANY.
['PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] WELLINGTON, June 26. About thirty gentlemen attended the meeting at the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon to dhcuss tho question of forming an Electric Light Company for Now Zealand. Mr W. T. L. Travoro convened the meeting, and Mr Dranefleld occupied tho chair. In a lengthy speech Mr Travers spoke of the advantage to be obtained from lighting cities with electric light, and said he had brought the question more prominently before the public, to asoeitaiu what support could be expected towards supplying "private and public electric lights. He read several reports of electric companies at home to show tnat electric light was now an unqualified success. Ho hoped that one company for the whole colony would bo successfully floated, as having separate companies would be attended with considerable expense. Of course a local directorate in other parts would be appointed ; but the chief directors would reside in Wellington. He argued that if the question of lighting a city by electric light was left to gas companies it would have very alow development.
After a short discussion Mr Travers moved tho following resolution, whioh was seconded by the Hon. W. Martin—“ That in the opinion of this meeting it is expedient that a company should be formed, to bo called the Now Zealand Electric Light Company, Limited, to undertake the business of public and private lighting, and the application of electricity to purposes of locomotion, with a capital sufficient to enable it to carry on tho business in all parts of New Zealand, and that tho following gentlemen bo appointed to prepare the memorandum and articles of association, and prospectus of the company : —Mr J. E. Brown, M.H.R.,SHon. J. Martin, Oapt. Ross', Messrs Pownall, Thorpe, Mills, Barnett, Shannon, Fisher (Mayor), Logan, Dawson, Harris, Lawson, Travers, Dransfisld, McDowell, Harcourt, with power to add to their number.” Tho resolution was carried unanimously and a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Travers, for the interest he had taken in the matter.
