WANGANUI, June 21

A painful case came before the Resident Magistrate to-day, A boy named Connell, eleven years of age, charged with breaking into the house.of Mrs Mullins, who is away in Wellington, and stealing £lO therefrom, is brother to the boy who was recently committed to the Nelson Orphanage, and who has caused so much trouble before by running away. Accused is remanded for evidence. DDNEDIN, Jane 21.

Macdonald, a shepherd in the employ of Boyd Brothers, Hillend, fell from his horse while intoxicated, and was dragged some distance. When found he was unconscious and so remains.

INVERCARGILL, June 21

The Supreme Court opened to day. Judge Williams, in hii charge, remarked upon the greater number of cases than usual, but he did not regard it as indicating a substantial increase of crime in the district. Commenting on a case of embezzlement by a railway clerk, he said the Grand Jury would agree with him after hearing evidence, that it was strange some more efficient means could not be found for protecting the public funds than appeared to exist at present. At the Supreme Court this morning Wb. Bilson, for theft, who had been four months awaiting trial, was sentenced to one month, and John Woodrow, for assault, to one day, he having been in gaol some time also, and leniency being recommended by the jury. In the case of Cornelius Hogan, charged with cutting trees on property known as Powelltown, the Crown Prosecutor asked to have the charge withdrawn. The Judge accordingly discharged the accused, concurring in the remark of bis counsel, that the Resident Magistrate should have dealt summarily with thejoasc.
