LICENSING COMMITTEE.
SYDENHAM. The adjourned annual meeting was held today, at noon, in the Borough Council Chambers, Sydenham. Present —Mr O. A. Pritchard (chairman) and Messrs T. H. Bone and W. Langdown. new licenses. The committee considered the applications seriatim, and disposed of each case before the next was introduced. John Bishford, premises to be erected at Ferry road and Burke street (Mr Thomas). .The Chairman referred to the statutory provision for six rooms at least. Counsel said the building was in course of construction. Mr Joyce, on behalf of some petitioners, objected, the provision as to rooms applying to boroughs. Ho relied on Sec. 38. The Committee had inspected the locality ; were of opinion that a house, if built according to plans submitted, would be convenient; but they could not see their way to granting the application. The application was accordingly refused. Counsel intimated that the building of the premises would be proceeded with ; and, at the conclusion of the meeting, the Chairman, daring a discussion, informed .’counsel that the Committee were unanimous in the opinion that suitable premises on the site would be a convenience.

Crowley, Bridge Hotel, Madras street ( (VTr Perceval)—Refused. P. Ditford, Wordsworth street and Waltham road (Mr Perceval.) —Refuted. Ed. George, Selwyn street and Hazeldean road (Mr MoConnel.)r— Refused. O. 8. Hamilton, Second and Barbadoes streets (Mr Thomas-)! —Refused. S. Lawrence, Colombo and Battersea streets (Mr Gresson.)- Applicant, examined on
oath, said he had never been fined, nor had hi* license been taken from him wb * le at the Wheat Sheaf Hotel some years ago_. JNo complaint had ever been made against him.— Application granted 5 improvements to bo eff ectedacoording to plane,within three month*, object in view being to obviate the continued existence of a mere bar for drinking purposes, W. Lockwood, Colombo and Battersea streets (by personal application). —Befused, house not required. Mr Lockwood desired to know how it was, as he alleged, that the result as to each case had been known beforehand. The Chairman replied that he was not aware such was not the case.
D. Maher, Kingsley and Battersea streets, —Befused. 0. F. Money, Park road and South bolt (Mr Loughroy). Mr Joyce appeared <0 oppose. Applicant stated he had previously held a license in this province, and had never forfeited it.—Applioalion granted, conditionally on stables being constructed to accommodated at least six horses. The house, it was deemed, would prove a great convenience, and in the applicant’s own interest, the committee strongly recommend the use of brick material, as its adoption would render it the more probable that the hotel would become a permanent institution. Mr Loughrey said his client was content to leave the matter to the committee’s discretion. After discussion, the applicant said that of the alternate plans submitted, bo would choose that by wliioh brick was to be used.
Fred. Peiper, Great Western, Selwyn street (Mr Loughrey).—Befused, house not being required. T. A. W. Parsons, Colombo road.— Befused, the house not being required. The committee regretted having to arrive at this decis on, the applicant’s personal recommendations being of the highest character. H. Scrimshaw, Harper and Battersea streets; H. Stephenson, Kingsley street, Gasworks road ; H. Turkingfcon, Wordsworth and Madras streets; J. Webley, Colombo street south.—All refused. W. Walls, Colombo and King streets (Mr MoOonnel). —Granted, stabling to bo provided for six horses at least. RENEWALS. F. O. Bowler, Waltham Arms, Waltham road (Mr Loughrey) ; B. Belgrave, Crown Hotel, Montreal street and South town bolt (Mr Loughrey) ; and J. Johnstrn Kingston, Colombo street (by personal application).— All granted. Only one bar applied for in eaoh case, MIDNIGHT LICENSES. Extension to midnight were granted to Messrs Bowler, Belgrave, and Johnston. The committee decided not to entertain appheations to day for extensions of the closing hour to newly licensed houses. These could be entertained at next quarterly meeting, PEE IMPOSED, Charles Gold-jtone, Railway Befreshmont Rooms (Mr Joyce). The license had bieo granted at the previous meeting, the hours to be as before, namely, for convenience of passenger trains. The committee now fixed the fee at £3O.
