HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

A meeting of the above Board was hold on Wednesday. Present—Hia Worship th Mayor of Ohristohurob (in the chair), Dr. Prina, and the Mayor of Sydenham, The Secretary apologised for the nonattendance of Mr J. Q-. Hawkea. The Hospital committee reported during the fortnight ended Jane 10th, fifteen patients wore admitted and seventeen discharged from the Hospital, leaving seventy-four patients in the institution. During the same period two deaths had occurred. For the corresponding period of last year seventy patients were in the Hospital. ~ Mr Hobden was elected dispenser, vice Mr Hawkes, resigned. , The report from the casual ward stated that only one patient was in the ward. The Bev. W. J. Habona wrote, elating that the Hon. Mr Dick wished to fall in, as far as possible, with the views of the Board and of the orphanage committee, pointing out the inconveniences that might arise if the manager was placed under the schoolmaster during school hours, promising that gentleman’s decision on receipt of the Board’s reply, stating further that ho would approve of ,ite acceptance of the proffered resignation of the master and matron of the orphanage. In this connection the following memorandum waa read ' — ... The proposal for the master of the school to take the younger children is found in the report from the Inspector- General of Schools. If the present roaster loaves it would depend on the qualification of his successor as to whether that plan was adopted or not. Instead of appointing a schoolmaster to take entire charge of the elder children during school hours, it be found desirable to engage only an assistant to the master. _ In reorganising the staff of tho institution one very important point has to be considered, and it is this, that there are other hours besides the school hours, and it is during this time that the children require some one to aid them, the elder ones in habits of industry, the younger ones in amusements. , . _,, , The master or superintendent of the orphanage cannot possibly attend to the general management of the institution, instruct all the elder boya and girls daring school hours, ana then share in their work or amusements outside. Any little difficulty or obstacle that may appear at first sight can easily be overcome it the staff unanimously work together; the exact position of each officer would, however, be clearly defined in order to prev.at any inconvenience that might possibly ansa.

r It was resolved to forward the memorandum to the Colonial Secretary, whilst the 9 ne ‘ tl ° n of the date of Mr Sopp’a leaving the Orphanage was referred to the chairman ant* Orphanage committee; and that when > date was agreed upon an advertisement saou be inserted in the public papers calling 1° applications for the vacancies. It was also resolved that Messrs Thomson, Holmes and Allwright, M.H.B.’b, be written to, asking them to interview the Colonial Secretary, with a view of obtaining a training ship at Lyttelton, according to the Board s previous application. , A satisfactory report was read from She Ashburton Home, notifying one admission, and thirty-five inmates. A letter in reply was read from the Colonial Secretary’s office, stating that the cost of maintaining the Canterbury Orphanage and the Home at Ashburton is regularly charged against all boroughs and counties in the provincial district of Canterbury. A number of charitable aid oases were then considered, and the Board adjourned.
