OAMASU STEEPLECHASES. [fbbss association telegsaii.l OAMABTJ, June 12. At the Oamarn Steeplechases there was a fair attendance, the weather being splendid. The ground was heavy after the late rains and in consequence the races were sot ran in very quick time. Oasiabu Steeplechase Handicap- of 100 sovs; three miles. Mr Pilbrow's Clarence, 12st 71b 1 Sir Dongas' iiaron, lOtt I2ib 2 air O'Brien's Trovatore. lOst 31b 3 Why Not (lOst 121 b), fiocket (lObI 101 b), Toung Sledmere (lOst 101 b), Black Doctor (lOst), alao started. A G was scratched.
After the start, Rocket went to the front and led over the first hurdle. Trovatore ran round the seoond hurdle. Clarence and Baron took the gorse fence together, all the others baulking. Clarence and Baron then took a long lead, the race being virtually left to themselves, for a series of baulks put the rest out altogether. Baron was allowed to lead Clarence, but it was only on sufferance, for on reaching the straight the latter waa brought up, and without an effort won easily. Maiden Plate, of 35 eovs ; two miles. Mr Soaluter's Battler 1
Mr Sutherland's Wild Boy 2 Mr Douglas's A.G 3 Canard, Gang A wo, and Moltke, also ran. 1 horntup and Trovatore ware scratched. MoUke ran round, and Battler fell at the first hurdle, but was quickly remounted. This race was a series of mishaps and baulkings. Canard, the favorite, came down at the water jump, and was brought home. Wild Boy atid A. G. were first over the water jump, but both baulked at the hurdles on the flat, and were pasied by Battler, which came in alone. After about a quarter of an hour's persuasion Wild Boy and A. G. were brought round, the pothers not being pcrßtvered with. Talltho Stakes of 50 sovs. Weight for age. Clarence 1 Why Not 2 Baron 3 Young Sledmere and Gang Awa also ran. B&ron led at the start, but on nearing the itand was passed by Clarence. The first water jump was negotiated by Baron and Clarence, but Young Sledmere and Why Not baulked. Gang Awa had previously ran oft the course. Why Not rapidly overhauled the leaders, and at the second hurdle at the back of the course he was level with them, snd they went on in advance. Gang Awa took the gorse fence about three lengths in advance of Clarence, but on the plough was passed by the latter, who led over the next gorse. On reaching the straight Why Not raado his effort, and, amidst some excitement, Clarence won a good raoe by three-quarters of a length. Consolation of 30 aovs. Black Doctor 1 Gang Awa 2 Trovatore 3 This was a good race. All the jumps were takon by Black Doctor. Gang Awa baulked once, and Trovatore several times. The raoe was won by Black Dootor by a neok. Wild Boy also ran, but did not finish. HAWKE'3 BAY STEEPLECHASES. Lpbbss association tblkqkam.J NAPIER, June 12.
