ST. PAUL’S CHURCH CONCERT.
Last evening a soiree and concert were held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Lichfield street, the proceeds to be devoted in aid of the general fund of St. Paul’s Church. An excellent tea was provided by the joint hospitality of the following ladies, who kindly supervised the various tables :—Mesdamos Struthers and Badoliffo (bachelors' table), Mesdames Fleck, Davis, Blmehe, McDowell, Qrinstead, Button, Bishop, Stenhouoe, Broadley, W. Thomson, P. Hyndman, J. Gibb, and S. 0. Farr ; the Misses Miln and Miss Stevens, The tables having been cleared and removed, the scats were ranged so as to accommodate the largo number present, probably about seven hundred, including children. The Rev. J. Elmslie, minister of the church, preoided at the concert. The choir comprised nearly fifty members of various denominations, Mr H. M. Johnson conducting, and Mr H. Bilton playing the American organ. Amongst the gentlemen present were Meters W. Ohryatall, J. Anderson, R. 0. Bishop, S. 0. Farr, A. Soott, J. M. Watt, J. C. McDowell, E. Sutherland, P. and B. Duncan, R. Struthers, Dr. Macboan Stewart, and Mr R. M, Adair (hon. sec.). The programme, which was somewhat lengthy, consisted of Mr John Cook reading extracts from the story of ‘‘Uncle Tom,” the subject matter being relieved by the following musical selection: —“Beneath the Cross of Jesus,” the choir } “ Gwine to write to Maas Jesus,” solo, Mr S. O. Johnson bass ; “ The Palace of the King j” “ The Parting,” Miss Nssa, soprano; “Let tho good angels come in ;” "She sleeps in the valley,” Masters A. Brabner, treble, and B. Johnson, alto ; Handel's “ Come unto Mo,” Miss Yerrall, soprano ; “A sacred head, once wounded “ I know that my Redeemer liveth,’, Miss Robinson, soprano; “ Blessed are the dead,” an anthem, composed by the conductor ; Lindsay’s “Ho wipes the tear,” Miss Dansford, soprano; “We know not what’s Before us,” “ When the stars begin to fall ” (abbreviated) ; “ Steal aw y,” sang by the choir sitting; “A home i j Heaven;” “ It’s coming nearer ” ; Mendelssohn’s “ Oh, rest in the Lord,” Miss Oorriok, contralto ; “Enter into rest,” the Misses A. Radcliffe, soprano, and M. Hall, contralto ; and “ Homo at last. ’ The Bev. W. West, of Kumars, proposed, and the Rev, Cairns seconded a vote of thanks to the ladies who had provided the tea, and tho proposal was carried by acclamation, as also was the vote of thanks to Mr Cook and the ohoir, proposed by the Rev. A. M. MoOallura. A verse was sung of tho National Anthem, and tho proceedings eaded at a quarter after 10 o’clock.
