KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting was held on Tuesday evening. Present—Tho Mayor (Mr. Smith), On. Parnham, Woodford, Stanton, Eoldwick, and Pinching. Leave of absence granted to Crs. May, Mathewn, and Eraser. A telagram from Mr W. Wilson to Mr W. Alexandor relative to a road on a privato section web read, but considered r.s not applying to the Council, and referred back to the latter. A letter was read from Mr Helniore, solicitor, stating 1 ] the street to be laid out on Mrs Carew's properly, Fuller street, to North road would be formed and metalled, and asking the Council to sanction same. It was decided to agree to take ever the road on this uaderstandiug. Tho surveyor reported clearing of Akaroa street drain at la 41 per chain, and contract for Ohoka drain clearing was progressing. The fijodgate at the eat train drain was put in order and working well. 'lts boach road drain was now being cleaned. A gravel pit at end of Haven street had bcun fenced. Permission had been grant el the Oddfellows' Society to take sand for filling up from end of Hilton street. A culvert put in by Mr McLaohan in Pcraki strest was not satisfactory. Tho side channels nsar Messrs Dny's, Wilson's, and Hayman's in Jonee' street required filling, and pipfsjput in, the work to cost £27. The question of the culvert agreed to be made by Mr McLachan at a private street was referred to tho works committee. It was decided to call the attention of the Mandeville and Kangicra Kjtid Board .to the drain on the north side of Beach road. On motion of Or. Parnham seconded by Or. Pinching, it tras decided to put pipes in Jones street, near Mr May's property; also that tenders be called, as recommended by the surveyor, for 1400 yards of road metal. Mr Blackwell attended and asked i£ the Council would ciuse two additional lamps to bo erected at the west end of Charles street. Referred to lighting committee. Mr Wilson complained of nui;anc3S from stagnant water on tlie railway proper'y and behind Burnip'a Hotrl. Beferred to Inspector of Nuisanoes. Cr. Ftldwick, in the absence of the chairman of the finance oomznittee, reported the receipts for the fortnight to be—rates £1 10j, dog tax Id. The present overdraft was £lB9 3i 101. Accounts, £26 4s 7d, were passed. Tho returning officer notified the re-election of Messrs Hewlings and Matthews as auditors. A statement of estimated receipts and expenditure for the current year showed a total of £3589 3s 101, and a deficiency to be met of £2453 3s 101, of which the main item was £ISOO for a new bridge. At tbo suggestion of Cr. Parnham tho question of drahaje from Charles street to the river was rc-ferrtd to the works committee. The Mnyor made a statement of a number of matters which ho had brought under the notice of the member for the district, and which were approved of. The Mayor and Councillors Woodford and Parnham were appointed a committee to select a site for the proposed now general cemetery. Notioo of intention to strike a rate of Is in the £ for the current Tear was given, and the Council then adjourned.
