Jarces Rutherford, a farmer of Remuera, an old settlor, dropped dead to-day at his own gat© whils going out. At the volunteer review tc-Jay, during the firing of the feu de joie, William Bradly, of Hobson and (Jo , was accidentally wounded by the fire of a carbine, and will probably lose the use of an eye. The foundation stone and the portico and tower of St. Andrew's Church was laid today by Robert Whitson in the pretence of a large assembly. A conference of temperance workers was held in the Young Men's Christian Association rooms. Sir Win. Fox dolivered an interesting address in favor of better temperance Temperance subscriptions are being raised for the maintenance of Native and European temperance lectures. Negotiations are also taking place for the visit on a lecturing tour of Mr J. B. Gough.
An examination of the market to-day shows the damage to be £450 by fire. At the polling in the Ponsonby suburb the ratepayers voted by 6 to 1 Bgainst an inoroase of publicans' licenses, WELLINGTON, May 23.
The weather to-day was beautiful, and a close holiday was observed. The usual Koyal salute and feu de joie was fired by the Volunteers. There was a large attendance at the sports. The handicap race over the regatta course between the principal yachts had to be postponed, owing to there being no wind. H.M.P. Cormorant arrived from Sydney at 9 this morning. DUNEDIN, May 24. A four-roomed house in the N.E. Valley, occupied by Edwin Jarvis, was burned down last night. Contents uninsured. The house, which belonged to James Howard, is insured in the Colonial office for £l5O.
