MAORI OFFENDERS ARRESTED
[FBKBB ASSOCIATION TBLBOBAM.) AUCKLAND, May 19. The Native Minister, ascertaining that Pakeraand Epiha were at Tawhiao’s meeting at Whatiwhatihoe, instructed Colonel Reader to take steps for their arrest, and he directed the Auckland police accordingly. Sergeant McGowan, in charge of the Waikato sub district, received instructions to effect their arrest at all hazards. He placed sentries on all the roads. Instead of coming through Hamilton or Cambridge, an was expected, they went down the Waipu by canoe, after staying a night at William Barton’s settlement. Hearing they were at the settlement below, Barton took two constables by steamer up to the settlement, and after a desperate hand to hand struggle with about thirty Natives, captured Pakera and Epiha without bloodshed. They were taken to Hamilton. Seme doubt the identify of Epiha. Mr Bush, R.M., was telegraphed for to identify him. The offenders will then be brought on to Auckland.
