BOROUGH COUNCILS.
SYDENHAM. Tho usual fortnightly meeting of this body was held last night, all being present except Or. White, who was absent through illness. A letter from certain residents in Smollett street, a-king that the street be formed, on condition of their paying a portion of the cost, was referred to the works committee. The works committee’s report stated, on works done in the borough, that the committee suggested the acceptance of an offer to rent the borough recreation reserve at Addington at an increased rental. The report was received and adopted. The lighting committee reported that, owing to the apathy of the Spre,don Koad Board in refusing to pay part cost, they could not recommend that an application to erect a lamp in Strickland street be complied with. Tho reports were adopted. The borough auditors wrote congratulating the Council on the satisfactory manner in which the borough accounts were kept. Cr. Brown having de ailed the result of an interview with tho Hon. Wm. Kolleston on the matter of the borough endowment reserve, it was decided that the report of Cr. Brown be received and adopted, and an urgent letter be sent to Wellington asking that the vexed question of the Councils reserve be dealt
with without any further delay. The finance committee reported)! the receipts of the fortnight as .£l6l j6s lid; expenditure, £177 19s 10s. Cr. balance at Bank, .£l-130 9b lid. The report was adopted. Soma routine business haying been despatched, the Council adjourned.
A special meeting of this Council was held this afternoon. Present—The Mayor, Ors. Brown, Forrester, Hall and Pavitt. The Mayor stated that the meeting had been called in compliance with section 133 of the Municipal Corporation Act, 1876, to consider the borough accounts; On the motion of Ora. Brown and Pavitt, it was resolved—- “ That the accounts of the borough treasurer for the year ending 31st Match, 1882, os certified to by the borough auditors, be deemed to be the true accounts of the borough for the said period.” The balancesheet was then signed, and the Council adjourned.
ST. ALBANS. A special meeting of the above Council was held last evening at a quarter to seven o’clock to consider a by-law for the regulation of slaughterhouses within the district. present His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Cra. Dickenson, Money, Turner, E'mntreo, Moor, Mann and Bull. On the motion of Cr. Turner, seconded by Cr. Moor, a by law similar to that in force in the b'elwyn county was approved and adapted, and the seal cf the borough affixed thereto. It was resolved'*That a special meeting cf the Council to confirm the above resolution bo held on the 12th Jane, at 7.15 p.m.” An ordinary meeting of the Council was then held, the same Councillors being present. The Mayor intimated that he had been informed by the clerk of the Avon Koad Board that was the intention of the Board at its meeting tomorrow eve ing to make the final payment to the Council of the balance owing under the award of the Auditor-General. The Mayor reported that- the joint committee on works and finance had considered the question submitted to it by the Council at the last meeting, and hud decided to recommend the Council to ask for cower from the ratepayers to raise a loan of £IO,OOO, in sums as may bo required, for widening roads, forming and kerbing same, and other permanent works. On the motion of Cr. Eountree, seconded by Cr. Mann, the report was adopted. On the motion of Cr. Dickenson, seconded by Cr. Bull, it was resolved—‘‘‘l hat the works committee bo requested to take into consideration at early date the works contemplated to be performed out of the proceeds of the £IO,OOO loan intended to he raised, and that they direct the surveyor to prepare all the necessary plans and estimates ; also, that the finance committee give their attention to the steps necessary to be taken to give effect to the resolution of the Council to borrow £10,000.” It was resolved—‘‘That tenders be called for fcerhing, forming the pathway in Pnpanui road from the Town belt to May’s road, and kerbing the footpath from the Town belt up Springfield road to St. Albans road; tenders to be called for each work separately.” After dealing with some correspondence and routine business, the Council adjourned.
