At the Supreme Court to-day, in discharging the Native prisoners charged under the West Coast Settlement Act, the Judge said—- “ I understand tho Attorney • General has ordered the Crown Prosecutor to enter n nolle prosequi in the two Native oases under the West Coast Settlement Act. I have no right to interfere in the matter in any way, except to express my surprise at such a course taken that tho prisoners should be brought up on such a serious oaarge, under a special Act, that they should be kept in prison for six months on that grave charge, and that the Crown Prosecutor should apply to enter a nolle prosequi seams a very extraordinary proceeding on tho part of the Government, more especially when I see that two of tho indictments have been quashed on account of the inouffioiency on the face of them.” Then addressing Rangi, ho said —“ The Government have determined uot to bring you to be tried on the charge you have already been in prison six months waiting for, nor do the Government offer any evidence. You are, therefore, free to go where you will.” The Natives did not seem to understand the situation, but left the box. This morning, the cases of William Richards, for horse stealing, and George Lacy, for larceny, were tried. Lacy received sentence to two years’ hard labor. The jury are considering the verdict in Richards’ case, William Gallagher, charged with killing a Native, has just been committed. WELLINGTON, May 9.

A case of some interest has boon decided at the Appeal Court, It was an appeal from the verdict of the jury in the case of J. Q-, Hislop v the National Bank of New Zealand, tried in the District Court of Westland before Judge Board, in which the plaintiff recovered £IOO damages for injury done to his credit and reputation through the dishonoring of a cheque. The appeal, which was on the ground of misdirection fey the Judge, was allowed, and judgment ordered to be entered for the defendant in the Court below, with costs.

Drink has been sold in large quantities to the Natives by the Alexandra publicans, and there has boon a great deal of drunkenness The hotelkeepers sold drink, holding that Alexandra was not within the Native licens ing district. The question was a very narrow one, and on inspection being made, opinion was expressed that practically it is outside the district.

A meeting of the Executive Council will be held to-day to alter the boundary as soon as possible, so as to bring Alexandra within the Native licensing district. DUNEDIN, May 9.

At the City Court to-day, Eliza Whittol was committed for trial on a charge of stealing jewellery. The son of Captain Bussell, marine surveyor, aged nine years, while having some teeth extracted at Mr Armstrong’s, chemist, died while under chloroform. INVERCARGILL, May 9.

Early this morning, a fire broke out in the premises in Tay street, occupied by T. J Lumsdon, watchmaker, and spread to the Bank of Australasia adjoining. Both places were soon burned to the ground. A considerable quantity of furniture and effects were saved from the Bank. At one time it seemed as if the premises of the Bank of Now South Wales (brick), to the left of the burning buildings, would be destroyed, and A. Watson’s, a brick shop on the right, separated by a right-of-way, was also in danger. The portion nearest the fire was occupied by Peters, a hairdresser, whose stock was considerably damaged by fire and water ; also the Bank of New South Wales, from which the furniture removed was also damaged. Nothing is at present known of gthe origin of the fire. Lumsden says evarvthing was right when he loft the shop at 10 30 last night The buildings destroyed were very old, and it is understood that the Bank contemplated the erection of now premises shortly. HTJRUSHX, May 9. About four o’clock yesterday afternoon Mr Holders’ large coach stable was totally destroyed Dy fire. The horses were saved, but a quantity of feed was destroyed. Tho stables were insured. Ihe origin of the fire is unknown.
