NEW ZEALAND.

(.per raa«a association,] AUCKLAND, May 1. O’Brien ottemptsd the feat of walking seventy five miles in twelve hours on Saturday, but only covered 65 miles 17 laps. He attributes his failure to ill-health and tbe smallness of tbe hall. The steeplechase match of £IOO aside between Te Whotu and Oatoh-e’m resulted in an easy victory for the former. The wife of a laboring man has eloped with another laborer to Hokianga, and the hueband has burnt his own house at Villor’s Creek, it is supposed in order to prevent her paramour getting the benefit of his labor. The principle of increasing publicans’ licenses has been affirmed at Hamilton. Five hundred acres of the Waipa block at Patatere has been sold for £IOOO. An average yield cf eighty bushels of maize per acre wore obtained from Opotiki. ALEXANDRA, May 1. Nothing is doing at Xawhaio’e settlement beyond"Whatiwhatihoe, except providing for guests, wha continue to arrive from various parts of the country on horseback, buggies, anfi foot. Yesterday a local publican sent to the settlement and saw Tawhaio about the Hon. Mr Bryce’s prohibition against the sale of drink. Tawhaio said that, on asking the Native Minister to prohibit the sale, he only intended it to apply to his own settlement, not Alexandra. He gave a telegram to send to Mr Bryce to that effect, consequently the police have not enforced the prohibition here to-day. To Makau oamo in this morning, and had a long consultation with Mr Bush, the Government representative. From enquiries I find that Tawhaio was not disinclined tomeet Mr Bryce, but it appears Mr Bryco telegraphed, saying he would oomo to Alexandra if Tawhaio wished. Tawhaio thought if he replied “Come,” Mr Bryce would then ask him what he had sent for him for. If he had come of his own notion, Tawhaio would have met him in Alexandra. Tbe Kakapn block, which Alexander McDonald is endeavoring to secure for the Ngatiraukawas, includes the mountain bearing that name, which forms a conspicuous feature in Alexandra scenery within the Kingite terri tory. Correspondence has passed between Tawhaio and McDonald on the subject. Kakapu is known to be rich in copper ore. When C, O. Davis heard that the notices prohibiting drink in Alexandra had not been posted, he saw Te Ngaku, who said all the chiefs agreed that drink ought to bo stopped. Ho said the meeting of Natives who came with him from Kaiwha yesterday had been broken up through drunkenness. It was no use stopping drink at Whatiwhatihoe it the fountain was not stopped at Alexandra. Te Ngaku went with Davie, and represented tha matter to the sergeant of police, who said he had not posted the notices because the

meeting had not begun. When he was assured the meeting would commence, he promised to issue the prohibition immediately. Tawhiao soon afterwards came into Alexandra with his gun and orderly to get wuds for pigeon shooting, He said he has misunderstood the matter. He thought he had caused the stoppage of grog to Europeans. The prohibition against the Natives drinking ought to immediately. I find that the cause of disagreement between Tawhiao’s counsel and Te Ngaku arose out of Te Ngaku’s name being attached to a letter asking the Native Land Court to survey and adjudicate the title of the Haratai block of land in the Kingite country, between Maungatautowhanui and Orakau. Te Ngaku has produced letters proving that his name has been signed without his authority. He telegraphed to Judge Fenton to cancel the application. There is no chance of any business being done at the meeting to-day. j NAPIER, May 1., The Customs revenue for the month of April amounted to £3934.
