SOUTH CANTERBURY RACES. [by our special reporter.] TIMARU, April 25. The first day of the abov -t meeting was held on the beautifully situated course near the Washdyke to day. Although the day was beautifully fine and wirm for tbe season of the year, the attendance was much below tho usual average. A capital brass band was in attendance, and enlivened the intervals between the events with some pleasant music. The racing was not altogether as good as might have been expected. With tho exception of the Cup, the finishes were very indifferent, and not such as to cause vawih excitement. The following are the results : Trial Stakes of '0 sovs. Weight for age. On rounding the turn Luna improved her position by quickly running up on the inside and took second place on the filly's quarters, Chancellor and Libeller close up. On nearing tho next post Butler's mare, which was running very Btrong, by some means ran tho wrong side, thus completely losing a very good show of winning the race. The Envy filly still continued with tho lead round the back Btretch and so on to the home turn, where Sir Modred and Libeller were her most immediate attendants, and Emir Bey still tailing off When fairly in the straight Tasman appeared to be improving his position, and passing Libeller got on terms with Sir Modred.
