He died shortly after hii admission to the Hospital. His wife and family are at Port Chalmers. Fatal Effects of Drink. At the inquest on the body of Samuel James, the jury returned a verdict that death was caused by an excess of drinking at Kihikihi, and condemned the pnblicans for supplying intoxicated persons with drink. The Mount dock licensing district poll resulted against &a increase of all licenses by two to one.
HOKITIKA, April 21. The polling under the local option clause for the borough of Hokitika licencing district waß taken today, and in all instances resulted in a majority against increasing the number of licenses.

Tho barque Janet McNeil from Glasgow, which arrived to-day, reports that whilst running through the north-east trades she was covered with clouds of fine dust, of a light cinnamon color, which continued to fall until she got to the southward of Oape de Verde Islands.

'xhe East Road Cemetery. The total number of persons buried in the East road Cemetery since the ground was first set apart for burial purposes twenty years ago is 1525.
