LOCAL OPTION AT SYDENHAM.

Exceptional interest was taken yesterday at Sydenham in the poll taken in the local Borough Council Chambers, before Mr G-. LLee, Eetuming Officer. From 9 am. until 6 p.m. strenuous efforts were made by the respective champions for and against, a large cumber of vehicles bsinc; employed in convejing voters. Several olergymen were conspicuous in their efforts to stay the chanoe of an increase iu the number of licenses, one reverend gentleman in particular taking a l:irge numfcer of voters in a carriage. Despite the excitement, good humor and order prevailed. After six o'olock had struck, about a dozen intending voters presented themselves at the door, but were debarred from voting through being late. At a quarter past eight there was an expectant crowd of 150 people, waiting to hear the result; and they were informed, unofficially, that the decision was that the number of publicans' liounses in the district may be increased, but not the number of any other licenses. This announcement was greeted with some slight cheering. The voting resulted as follows : • That tho number of publicans' licenses in the district may be increased—For, 280; against, 244 ; majority for permission for an increase, 3G.
