AUSTRALIAN.

[BETJTEE'S TELEOEAMS.] MELBOURNE, April 11

A serious accident occurred yesterday afternoon at the Queen scliffe battery. One of the guns which was being used by the volunteers for practice burst, and two of the detachment were seriously injured. The report circulated last night to the effect that a gun had burst at the Qtieenscliffe battery was not correct. The accident occurred in the following manner:—One of the forty pounder Armstrongs was fired, when the shell with which it was loaded exploded immediately after leaving the muzzle of the gun, and two civilians (not volunteers, as previously stated), who were walkiug below the cliff, were struck by the pieces. One of them is so seriously injured that his recovery is not expected. The coach which runs between this city and Lillydale met with an accidont this morning, and four persons were injured.
