AGRICULTURAL & PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the general committee of the above association was held this afternoon, at two o’clock, in the rooms of the association, Hereford street. Present—Mr P. Cunningham (in the chair), Messrs Peacock, Norman, Wilkin, Hill, Parker. J. Anderson, jun,, Bruce, J. Gould, and J. T. Ford. The following letter was read from Mr Buchanan, of Tupurupuru, near Wellington : —“ Dear sir,—Some of the members of our local Pastoral Society hero have expressed a wish to confine entries in the class * shorthorn ’ to animals entered in the N.Z, or Coates’ Herd Book only. I have pointed out to them that for various reasons, which it would take up too much time to specify here, no society that I am acquainted with —not even the E I yal Society of England —has embodied such a restriction in its rules. Will you kindly get and communicate to mo an expression of opinion from your association.”
It was decided to reply that the asssociation did not enforce such a rule as that referred to. Accounts were passed for payment to the amount of £l4 19s.
The sub-oommitece appointed for the purpose submitted general regulations for the show of fat stock to be held in May next.
Mr Wilkin said they were very simi'ar to those in force at the annual shows.
The regulations were then agreed to. Mr Hill, referring to the different sections of stock in the catalogue, thought the amount of prizes offered rather excessive. The Chairman pointed out that it was estimated that the expenses would be £197 15s, and the receipts from entries £65, leaving a balance of £lB2, as against the money that would be paid for admission. Mr Hill sugeeated that the first and second prizes should be £1 and lOs respectively, instead of £2 and £l. There would then be os many entries and a considerable eum would be eared. The Chairman said the matter had been fully considered by the sub-committee, who were of opinion that £2 would be little enough to cover the expenses of a first-prize taker.
Mr Hill thought that if there wan any probability of a lose accruing it would be better not to hold the show. The association should rather apply its efforts to enlarging and improving the grounds. The Chairman said the sub-committee hoped there would be no loss, but they argued that, even if there was a small deficiency, the Association should make an effort during the Exhibition time to show what the province could produce. . Mr Ford said the winter shows previously held had produced a loss, and he thought the same result would occur again. With reference to the remarks of the chairman, he did not thick the exhibitor should look so much to the money prizss. He agreed with Mr Hill that, in view of the necessity of improving the ground and obtaining more space, they should curtail their expenditure as much as possible. Mr Wilkin did not think there would be many entries if there were no money prizes, and the amounts set down, £2 and £l, were not too high. He was very much afraid there would be a loss from the ahow, and the question for the committee to determine was whether or not a show should be held. The Chairman pointed out that that had already been decided by the association. Mr Hill said he did not wish to oppose his opinion to that of the sub-commitloe, and would not propose any amendment. The sections as proposed by the sub-com-mittee wove then agreed to. The following sub-committees for tho year were then appointed : Finance Messrs * Anderson, Gould, Bruce, and Norman.
