THE EXHIBITION.
A meeting of the members of the various lodges of Druids in and around Christchurch was held at the Wellington Hotel last night, for the purpose of making arrangements for the procession on the occasion of opening the Exhibition. D.P. Skinner was voted to the chair. It was stated that the following Druids Lodges had agreed to take part, viz., Pioneer, Mistletoe, St. Albans, Perseverance, Campbell, Anchor, Oak of Sydenham. Mr Summerton, P.D.P., was elected Marshal tor No. 13, and Mr Harrington for No. 20 district. The four district officers will be D.P.’s Bros. Skinner and Timson ; Br. Bowe, secretary ; and Bro. Engleman, I.G. The secretary was instructed to inform the marshal, Mr Leahy, that the Druids will require about 400 tickets.
In order to enable the contractor to proceed with the flooring of the main entrance, it is absolutely necessary that all machinery, implements and heavy goods intended for the quadrangles be sent in on or before Saturday evening. Mr Fletcher, the gentleman in whoso charge the principal fine art gallery has been placed by Messrs Joubort and Twopeny, has arrived per Eotomahana, with the bulk of the water colors and oil paintings. A further lot will arrive by the s.s. Hero. During the time Mr Fletcher is awaiting the completion of his fine art gallery Messrs Joubert and Twopeny have asked him kindly to collect all loan pictures and attend to their safe conveyance to the Exhibition. Persons willing to contribute to this interesting and instructive are requested by the promoters to communicate their intention to them, or the secretary, without delay, as Monday has been fixed as the day when the hanging of the pictures is to be proceeded with. It is worthy of note that the main transept of the Exhibition building—333ft long, 94ft wide, and the walls 26ft high—has been substantially and exceedingly well put up in a marvellous short space of time, viz., fortyeight working hours. Many who visited the Exhibition building on Saturday last will remember the gap between the New Zealand and foreign courts. This gap is now filled by the transept. The art gallery has been floored. The work of flooring the concert room is being rapidly proceeded with, and early next week the work of hanging the pictures will be proceeded with. The promoters speak in the most glowing terms of the hearty manner in which the many hands engaged on the building are working to ensure all being in readiness for the opening day, hut they wish to finally remind many Christchurch exhibitors that if they do not put in an appearance to-morrow (Saturdaj), they will forfeit their allotted ■paces.
