Church Lecture-
The Rev. Mr Secoombe delivered a lecture on “ The Crooked Sticks ” in St. James' Hall, in aid of the building fund of his church, Christchurch. The Bev. Mr Eunciman presided, and there was a moderate attendance. Sawmill AccidentLouis Combes, engineer, Mercury Bay saw mill, was brought up to tho Auckland Hospital, suffering from an injury inflicted byths machinery. His arm had to be amputated. Consolidation. The suburbs are considering the quectiono amalgamation with the city, to obtain a wato supply and reduced taxation. WELLINGTON, March 11. Who is Captain Edwin? In reply to a congratulatory telegram sent to her Majesty the Queen, Captain Edwin has received the following reply : "To Commander Edwin, Wellington, New Zealand, 9lh March.—The Queen thanks Captain Edwin for congratulations.—KimBBEiET, London.” Xeg-al-Messrs Chapman and Fitzgerald, solicitors for one of the plaintiffs in the well known suit Bhodes v .Rhodes, Wellington, received a cable message from London yesterday, briefly stating that the Privy Council had allowed the appeal from the decision here. Full judgment will not be to hand for some weeks. It will have the effect, however, of conferring on Miss Rhodes tho annual income derivable from the late Mr Rhodes' estate, which is said to be very large. The Mails. The Arawata, with the English mail, will arrive here about 7.30 this evening. Ike Government steamer Stella will carry on the Southern portion of the mail ss soon as it can be transhipped, the Wallace waiting to carry on the Nelson and West Coast portion. Both steamers will probably get awsy shortly after eight to-night. DUNEDIN, March 12. “Patience-” “ Patience " has hid a moat successful run for a fortnight, full houses at increased prices continuing. The same company mill produce “ The Pirates of Penzance ” to morrow. INVERCARGILL, March 11. The Farmers’ AssociationThe articles of the Southland Farmers' Cooperative Association, Limited, were registered under the Industrial Provident Societies Act, 187 T, this morning, and the permanent committee of management elected, Mr Bateman to act as secretary for a time and to place tho association la working older. The cooperative movement among tho farmers is now looked upon as cn established feet, and business operations are fairly commenced. Proposed Whaling- CompanyAt an influentially attended meeting last evening it was decided to form a Southland whaling company, with a capital of £IO,OOO. Major Atkinson returned to-day by the Hawea. Mr Dick leaves to-morrow by the same boat for Nelson, t inspect lunatic asylum, gaol, and other institutions in his department. The Arawata, with the Eogiuh mail, did not leave Napier till one this morning, therefore it will not be here till late this evening.
