[phb fbkss AsaooiAnoir.] AUCKLAND, February 23. Trades' Union. An endeavor is being made among sawmill workmen to form a mill employes' union for the purpose of regulating the hours of labor. Crime. Geo. Bennett has been arrested on a oharge of robbing Geo. Berry of £l3 at Cox's restaurant. On being searched the exaot amount was found on him. Political* Mr Alfred Buokland's petition against the return of Major Harris is to be heard on the 14th prox. Valne of Suburban Land. Suburban property at Kyber Pass, Fairburn's estate, was sold at £I3OO an acre. The Premier and Rewi. The Premier had an interview with Bewi at Hamilton. On Mr Bryce introducing him, Bewi said to the Premier, " Some little time ago you were as another pakeha to me ; now you are my friend. I agree with Bryce that the time has come when friendship and confidence should be established between the Maori and the pakeha. The difficulty will be between the land of the Maori and the money of the pakeha." The Premier said in reply, that the Government and Mr Bryce would help and advise Rewi as to what was best for the interest of himself and his people. He was glad to see Rewi again. They then shook hands and parted. NEW PLYMOUTH, February 23. Atmospheric.
A large meteor was seen this evening in a northerly direction. When first seen it was surrounded with a sort of vapor. It then slowly floated eastward until it disappeared below the horizon. It was visible nearly two minutes. NELSON, February 23. The Rifle Contest The representatives who take part in the Nelson meeting are arriving here, but the attendance will not be so large as was last year. Deer Stalking. Only twenty-one licenses for deer stalking, which commenoed last Monday, have been taken out. On Monday one sportsman shot two stags, and he obtained another two on Tuesday. Another sportsman shot three in two dayp. GBEYMOUTH, February 23. Gold Export. An inquest was held to-day on the children burnt in Bieohefski's house on No new faots were elioited, and a verdiot of "Accidental death" was returned. Mrs Bischcfski is improving in hospital. Caution to Brewers and others. At tho polioe court today Wm. Btraohan, of the Viotoria Brewery, was fined £4O for negleoting to affix stamps to two casks beer removed from his brewery. Alexander Henderson, his drayman, whose duty it was to affix stamrs, and who pleaded forgetfulness, was fined £5 for aiding in the removal of suoh casks, and in another oase £lO for having drawn beer from a cask before having defaced the stamp thereon. J. E Hutchinson, a publican, was fined £2O for not defacirg a j stamp.
