MELBOURNE, February 23. Shipping. Arrived. —This morning, the Union Company's steamship Ringarooma, from the Bluff ; and the P. and 0. Company's steamship Assam, with the English mails via Suez and Brindisi, dated London, January 13th. A Stupid Hoax. The Russian Admiral, Aslanbegoff, has communicated with the Victorian Government regarding the publication in the Melbourne " Age" of a fictitious despatch from the Russian Government regarding the defences of Hobson's Bay. The despatch, it appears, was published as a joke. The Admiral, however, expressed to the Government his annoyance at the publication, and it has transpired that the Governor and Ministers have expressed their regret, and furnished an explanation to Admiral Aslanbegoff regarding the alleged despatch. ElectoralMr "Walker, a Constitutionalist, has been elected for Booroondara, in place of Mr Murray Smith, who was recently appointed Agent-General in London. SYDNEY, February 23.
