The Marquis of Salisbury, in a speech which he delivered at the Mansion House, spoke in support of the movement inaugurated by Lady Beotive to encourage the use of articles of dress of British manufacture, with a view to improve the British woollen industries. February 15. The Government have yielded to the protest of the military authorities against the scheme for the construction of a submarine tunnel from Dover to Calais, and will reconsider the subject. Bishop Hultz and the Homan Catholic clergy of Bath have invited Patrick Egan, who fled from Ireland to France, to return and contest the electorate of Meath in room of Mr Mulliwan, who retired. The proposals brought forward by Mr Gladstone in the House of Commons for the adoption of a modified form of cloture, in order to prevent the obstruction of Parliamentary business are being received with more favor, and Government now expect a majority on the question. Bofore the motion for the adoption of the Address in Reply to the Queen’s speech was finally disposed of in the House of Commons, an angry debate took place on the relations between the English Government and the Vatican, The Government asserted there was no truth in the statement that Mr George Errington, member for Longford, had been sent on a mission to Rome for the purpose of establishing a more direct relation with the Vatican as currently reported. The Opposition, on the other hand, alleged that such was the object of Mr Errington’s mission, and, moreover, that his expenses were paid out of the secret service fund. February 16. The Prince of Wales has presented to the Queen the special report of the Commission in connection with the late International Exhibition at Sydney, which was printed and prepared specially for presention to her Majesty. The “Times” views the movement inaugurated by Lady Bective to encourage the use of articles of dress of British manufacture with some misgivings, and says that it would be vain to wish it success, as Australia has such immense supplies of fine qualities of wools that it would be impossible to prevent their entrance into the United Kingdom,
The sum of £3OOO has been subscribed at New York for the relief of the Russian Jews. Relief meetings have been hold at Philadelphia, and the Mansion House fund now stands at £50,000.
Alarm and indignation has been caused by the explosion of infernal machines in two houses in Edinburgh, by which eight persons were seriously injured. The police have arrested one man for being concerned in the outrage.
