WRECK OF THE STEAMER WESTPORT.
I WESTPORT, February 17. I The steamer Wt-stport has either settled I on a snag or large stone. It appears that the j presence of a snag in the locality was known, but it was thought too deep to prove a source of danger to shipping. Means to raise the vessel have not yet been decided on. She was insured for £4OOO. WELLINGTON, February 17. The following telegram has been received from Captain Gibbs, of the steamer Westport, relative to a mishap to that vessel: — “ When shifting to take coal in the after hatch at the shoots, the forohold being full, a snag went through the bottom, I think, of the engine room. Tried everything to keep the water down, but failed ; got steam up to go to the bank, but could not move her. Removed everything possible ashore. The ship is now under water. The Kangaroo comes alongside at low water to take coals from the forehold."
