SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of tho above was held last night at their offices. Present —His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Ors. White, Langdown, Andrew, Pavitt, Hall, Forrester, Nicol, Webber. A letter was read from Or. Brown, asking to bo excused attendance on account of an accident which had happened to him. Letters were read : From Mr Bonnington and seven other ratepayers residing at Willow bank, asking for a lamp to bo erected at the corner of Edward street and the old Christchurch reserve. The clerk was instructed to write to tho Spreydon Road Board, asking that body if they would pay a proportion of tho expense, and to what amount if tho lamp were erected. From the Hoathcote Road Board, stating that in tho opinion of that body it would be advisable to stop the traffic on tho Ferry road while tho tramway works were in progress. Referred to the works committee, with power to act. From the secretary of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, forwarding the halfyearly statement of receipts and expenditure. The report was ordered to lie on the table for consideration until next meeting —From Mr J. O. Boyle, giving np possession of tho Council’s endowment reserve, and from the same offering to take reserve No, 30493, 800 acres, at 9i per acre. Referred to the finance committee with power to act. —The report of tho works committee was read as follows : “ Your committee beg to recommend that when the Tramway Company are constructing the Ferry road line they be prohibited from breaking up more than 100 yards at a time. Tho Mount Hutt Road Board have forwarded a cheque for the amount of £lO, being 2d per yard for 1200 yards of gravel taken from tho Endowment reserve. As the Board were previously informed that the Council would require 63 per yard we have informed them that their payment is only taken as being on account. Wo have informed Mr Patterson that the Council will be prepared to construct concrete side channelling in front of his property, Wordsworth street, if he can arrange with the ratepayers to pay one-half the cost of constructing it from Hawdon street to Madras street.—January 20th, 1882.” The report was read and adopted,—The finance commitlee reported the receipts for the past fortnight to have been £321 10s lid, and tho expenditure £lOl 2s lid. The credit balance at tho Bank was £846 17s 43. This report was also adopted.—Or. Hall moved the motion standing in hio name from last meeting as follows: —“ That in tho event of Messrs Joubert and Twopony’s International Exhibition being held in the A. and P. Society’s Show Grounds, this Council will, with tho permission of the Mayor, and under Section 58 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1876, grant £SO towards the rent to be paid to the A. and F. Association, upon a like amount being subscribed by the ratepayers of Colombo street.” Some discussion took place as to the utility of the motion, now the first stone of the Exhibition had been laid in another place. Or. Hall thought, as a matter of principle, it should be left to the Council. It was put to the vote, and declared carried by six votes against three.—A deputation waited on the Council in reference to the widening of Wilson’s road from the railway to Ferry road. The matter was referred to the works committee with power to act.— Messrs B. J. T.;Ford and J. Stanley Edwards waited on the Council as a deputation with reference to a new bridge over the Heatboote River, continuing King street. In reference to a promise made by the Council in Juno 1879, to pay one-third of the cost, providing the roads approaching it wore made and dedicated to tho borough. After some discussion tho matter was referred to the works committee. In the meantime the deputation were requested to put their proposal in writing. The deputation thanked the Council and withdrew. An application by Mr Edwards for the approval of certain sub-division# of his property near the proposed bridge above alluded to, was referred to the works committee for their report. Or. Andrew moved a resolution, and Or. Pavitt seconded, as follows —“ That tho Drainage Board be respectfully requested to reply to the town clerk’s letter, dated the 31st August, 1881, asking that Lord St. Leonards street and Lord Brougham street bo drained of the large amount of water that now accumulates at Colombo road, and that this Council thinks that if the Drainage Board engineer’s suggestion of the sth September last be carried out it will meet the requirements of the case.” The mation was carried unanimously. This concluded the buoiness, and tho Council adjourned.
