THE EXHIBITION.

As stated yesterday communication was made to the Government on the subject of granting a portion of Hagley Park to Messrs Joubert and Twopeny for the purpose of the Exhibition. His Worship the Mayor telegraphed the Premier on the subject, who replied that the Government would consider the matter if the City Council and Domain Board would join in a recommendation to the Government to grant a portion of the Park for the purpose. The telegram of the Premier was to the following effect:—— " The Government would be willing to grant lease of part of ;Park or Domain for Exhibition if requested to do so by the City Council, as representing the citizens of Ohristchuroh, and by the Domain Board as having charge of Domain. The conditions to be fixed here* after. No larger area to be granted than required for the Exhibition, and for no longer time than necessary." His Worship the) Mayor at once communicated with Mr It. Harper, the chairman of the Domain Board, and the members both of the City Council and Domain Board having h»«J interviewed on the subject, yesterday afternoon the following telegram was forwarded to the Hon. John Hall:—" City Council and Domain Board agree in requesting the Government to advise the Governor to grant a lease of a small portion of the Park to Messrs Joubert and Twopeny for Exhibition buildings. Plan of ground and conditions will be forwarded." This telegram was signed by the Mayor and Mr Harper. The site whioh will in all probability be selected, is that portion of the Park situate on the left-hand side of the Bicoarton road, and almost opposite the Hospital. Here a fine stretch of level ground can be obtained, and as unlike Oranmer square, there are no residences surrounding it, the objections which—though by a large number deemed to be merely obstructive—have been urged against the square site can have no weight now. It is very conveniently situate as to access, being in olose proximity to the Addington station, whilst the tramway from the centre of the city run* immediately in front of it.
