Everything is quiet at Parihaka, and great pains has been taken to impress upon the Parihaka Natives the necessity of preventing the return of alien tribes. Old Identities. At a meeting of the Early Colonists' Association, it was decided to oelebrate the approaching anniversary by a special gathering of old oolonists. Methodism. At the district meeting of the United Methodist Free Churches, the Bev. E. Boaden was appointed representative to the annual assembly. It was also deoided that the next district meeting be held in Napier in January, 1883. The Election Petitions JudgesMr Justice Johnston and Mr Justioe Williams have been appointed to hear tbe following eleotion petitions : —W P. Oowliahaw vW. H. Pilliett (Stanmore); Joseph Ivess v J. The Inevitable Banquet. The Hon. Mr Rolleston, Minister of Mines, arrived here last evening, and received several deputations. He will be entertained at a banquet this evening. DUNEDIN, January 19. AccidentArthur Stringer, six years old, was killed at Roxburgh, last night, by falling beneath the wheel of a dray, on which he was riding, A Judge's Opinion. The jury in the libel action, Massey v Allan, in whioh plaintiff olaimed £2500 damages, retired this morning, and after coming into Court, and learning from the Judge that £5 would carry costs, they gave verdict for plaintiff for that amount. The Judge said it was the most curious verdiot of all the curious verdicts he ever beard. A Large Purchase. The Union Steamship Oompany have purchased in Sydney, the wharf, the stores, and buildings formerly ocoupied by the Australian Steamship Navigation Company, for £30,000. INVEROARGILL, Jonuary 19. Value of Borough Property.

The valuation of rateable property in the town of Inveroargill for this year is £60,557. In 1872 the total valuation was £10,559. The ordinary revenue for the quarter ended 31tt ultimo amounted to £1,101,349, including Customs £366,235, railways £205,812, stamps £36,399, postal £34,398, telegraph £19,345, beer duty £17,024, judicial £16,679, depasturing licenses £36,927; and the expenditure waß £782,385—viz., £352,622 for permanent appropriations, £429,544 for annual appropriations, £215 for services not provided for. The land fund shows the receipts to have been £177,838, and the expenditure £119,118. Of the Public Works fund for the quarter, the expenditure was £331,289, including £49,500 for redemption of debentures. Local bodies accounts —Beoeipts £28,322, inoluding license fees £1786. Goldfielde revenues £5475, gold duty £9395, The expenditure was £17,113, leaving a balance in hand of £11,209. The celebrated Waitara ohief, Wiremu Kingi, whose death is recorded in to-day's telegrams, was the man through whose influence the first Native war (that of 1860) was begun in New Zealand. Wiremu Kingi has lived for many years in peaceful seclusion. He must not be confounded with Wiremu Kingi Matakatea, who was among the late prisoners. The full name of the ohief just deceased was Wiremu Kingi Te Bangitake. A long meeting of the Cabinet took place this afternoon, at whioh a considerable amount of important business was transacted. The particulars have not transpired.
