KING TAWHIAO AT AUCKLAND.

[FBESB ASSOCIATION 1 THIHBBAM.J AUCKLAND, January 19. The steamer City of Cork left Auckland for Orakei at ten o'olock to bring Tawhiao and party on, and afterwards headed up the harbor flying the Union Jack. As Auckland came in view, he sought in yain for the old landmarks, such as Fort Britomart, and was greatly astonished at the changes in and the extent of Auokland since he saw it over twenty years ago. On reaohing the wharf a vast orowd gave him three hearty oheers, the Artillery Band striking up " Auld Lang Syne," and on crossing the gangway the Mayor welcomed Tawhiao and party to Auckland on behalf of the citizens. He briefly thanked the Mayor. Tawhiao was then escorted to the carriage, accompanied by his sister, Paul of Orakei, the Mayor and Major Mair, who enterod it with him. Tawhiao's wife was in Major Mair's carriage. The other oarriages were filled with leading chiefs, representatives of local bodies and leading citizens, making a procession half a mile long. On the trip round the oily, the public buildings, water works, gasworks, factories, &0., were shown, and explained to the king and party. Tawhaiao was cheered at several points on his route. Strings of flags were across the streets and flying on the prinoipal buildings, as well as on the shipping in harbor. There were decorations of evergreens at several points, and bouquets were dropped from the drawbridge of the Auokland Timber Company into Tawhiao's carriage. In the aftornoon he doffed his Native oostume and dressed in European clothing, and accompanied by Major Mair, several chiefs, and Major Jaokson, he walked through the city and visited the Native office, also the Hon. Mr Whitaker, at the Supreme Court buildings with whom he had friendly conversation. Mr Whitaker expressed a hope '.that Tawhiao would more frequently visit Auckland, now that he had ( seen it again. meet House grounds, and with the obiefs was banquetted in the Choral Hall in the evening ; the Mayor presided. The king and party were greatly pleased with the handsome reoeption accorded them.
