of welcome and congratulation, which was responded to by Sir W. Fox. The eleotion of officers was postponed till to-day. The Harbor Works. The steamor Westport arrived this day at Motorua with cement for the New Plymouth Harbor works, and will land it at the breakwater. PATEA, January 13. Effects of Drink. A fight between some Natives and two Europeans ocourred at Whenumakura Hotel last evening. Koreopa, ex constable, was stabbed in the hand, on aocount of which the other Maoris broke the windows of the hotel. The affair arose from a drunken squabble. NELSON, January 13, Fire. A seven-roomed house in Wellington street was destroyed by fire early this morning. Mr Monday, the occupier, had his furniture insured in the Norwioh Union for £l5O, and Mr H. D. Williams, the owner, was insured in the Union in a similar sum. The origin of the fire is unknown. Nothing was saved. HAVELOCK, January 13. InquestAt the inquest on the body of Oharlos O'Donnell, held at Oanvasstown yesterday, a verdict was returned that the deceased was accidentally killed by a loaded truok passing over him. WELLINGTON, January 13. Heavy Sentence. The argument in the personation case against the Hon. O. J. Pharazyn was taken before the Chief Justioe this morning. His Honor held that the special verdiot was one of guilty, and sentenoed accused to one hour's imprisonment. Sentence to take effect from the commencement of the sessions. Remanded. Tubb, who was arrested on a charge o stealing £IOO belonging to the firm of Tubb and Fergus, of Timaru, has been remanded to Timaru. TIMABU, January 13. Valedictory. Mr B. Baotham, who has been Besident Magistrate here for throe years and a half, and has been transferred to Christ church, sat on the Bench for the last time to-day. There was a full attendance, and Mr White, Crown Proseoutor for the district, expressed their regret at Mr Beetham's removal, while congratulating him upon being seleoted to fill a more important post. Mr White spoke highly of Mr Beetham'a impartiality and courtesy as a magistrate, and hoped that in his new post he would win the same regard from the bar as he had done in Timaru. Mr Beetham reciprocated the feeling of regret, and said his relations with the bar had always been of the most oordial character. The looal justices had also assisted him most willingly and ably, and the officers of the Court and the Inspector of Police had been able coadjutors in the administration of justice. He felt deeply the kindness whioh prompted their bidding him farewell in this manner. Mr Beetham is to be entertained at dinner this evening.
The Water Supply. The Borough Council have resolved to spend a portion of the £II,OOO, balance of the Water Works Loan, in extending the supply to some of the suburbs. The New Railway Station. Steady progress is being made with filling in the ground reolaimed by the breakwater, to be used as a site for a new railway station, and a gang of men are preparing the new shunting lines thereon. DUNEDIN, January 13. A RumourThe " Herald" says that a rumour is current that an aotion involving the sum of £20,000, arising out of a reoent failure in Dunedin, is to be commenced by a well known compaby against a Dunedin firm. InsolvenciesAmong the insolvencies this week are Anderson Bros., bootmakers, debts £2033, assets £llßs ; and Thomas Black, jeweller, debts £lOls, assets £llOO.
