NORTH RAKAIA BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.

A meeting was held at Southbridge on sch January. Present—Messrs J. B. Campbell (in the chair), E. J. Lee, W. Bishop, S. Forsyth, and Job Osborne. Correspondence was road from the agent Union Bank of Australia, noting names and signatures of members of the Board.—From Messrs Harper and Co., declining to receive money on deposit.—From the Mutual Benefit Building and Investment Society, offering 5 per cent, for £I2OO for twelve months. The chairman stated that the offer had been accepted, and the money duly deposited.— From Mr W. A. Pearce, applying to have his rates remitted. The Board considered that such leniency was hardly necessary, and decided that the application be refused.—From Mr Peter Campbell, offering £lO per annum for ten years for right to graze part of reserve 1243, Tbe Board not being able to deal privately for a definite period with their reserves, declined the offer.—From Mr Edwin White, complaining that the reserves leased to him contained not one-half the quantity originally surveyed, and asking either to have his lease cancelled or the rent reduced by £4O per annum. The Board considered that as they had entered an action against one of their tenants for recovery of his rates, Mr White’s application could not bo considered at the present. From (Messrs Horper and Co., re claim v Mr Allan for rent. Mr Anderson’s application for transfer of Reserve 2381 a for a portion of Reserve 1376 was reconsidered, and it was agreed to comply with request contained in his letter of the 2nd December, all expenses of release and reconveyance to be borne by him. The Secretary reported that since tbe previous meeting he had collected and paid into the Bank £192 4s 6d rent account, and £ll6 rate account; thst, after paying accounts passed at the previous meeting, interest on debentures, and depositing £I2OO, there remained an overdraft of £l4B 4s lid. The report on the condition of the river showed that works were urgently needed at the crib works on Gallagher’s reserve and adjoining Knyvett’s gums. In both places the river was tearing away the old protections and leaving the frontages, so that it would be before long almost impossible to effect any repairs without incurring considerable additional expense. The Board determined to visit both places on the following day, and to decide on the ground what works it would be desirable to attempt. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr Hurst, asking him what land he contemplated offering in exchange for that portion of Eeserve 1376, between R.B. 28542 and tha blue gum plantation known as his wether paddock. The secretary was instructed to enter an action against some of the defaulting ratepayers, who do not seem to have taken any notice of the repeated applications for payment.
