Dennis Markham, formerly in the Auckland police force, was killed at Ellerslie through the bolting of his horse, while he was harnessing it. The Suspected Burglar. Plummer has been committed for sending a threatening letter to Mrs Dobson, and on charges of housebreaking atHazell’s, fruiterer. The charges of housebreaking at Heath’s are going on. Coastal. As an experiment several vessels have commenced trading in the Hauraki Gulf. The Russian Band. The band of the Russian war ship Africa played in the Government House grounds this afternoon. There were 3000 present. School Prizes. At the distribution of prizes at the High School the Mayor presided. He said he hoped the Government would soon provide better buildings and accommodation. NEW PLYMOUTH, December 16. Alleged Cattle Stealing-
The Police Court was occupied yesterday and to-day with a case of cattle stealing brought by two Parihaka Natives against a contractor for the forces. The evidence given by the Natives as to the ownership was of the slightest nature, and the cases were die* missed. MayoralThe new Mayor, Mr W. Bayly, will inaugurate his taking office with a banquet. BLENHEIM, December 16. Fatal Accident. A man named Henry Boyce was killed in the Wairau valley yesterday by the upsetting of a wool dray, which he was driving. In coming down a siding the dray capsized, throwing eeveral bales on the top of the man. Death was instantaneous. Deceased leaves a wife and four children. WELLINGTON, December 16. The Double Voting Cases. The Returning Officer for Thorndon to-day laid an information against the Hon. C. J. Pharazyn for plural voting at the recant election. Information has also been laid against two electors for South Wellington on a similar charge. The cases will be heard on Thursday next. A man named Smith, of Alfredton, has been arrested at Mastertoa on a charge of voting twice at the Wairarapa North election. A Horse Stealer. A young man named George Thos. Skinner was to-day committed for tria on two charges of horse stealing and forgery. Private Land Sale. The sale of the Levy estate took place this afternoon. The land was out up into small sections, and fetched good prices, the total sum realised being £8225. The WeatherA strong N.W. gale has been blowing all day. TIMARU, December 16. The Sports. The anniversary of the province was observed as a strict holiday throughout South Canterbury, and large numbers of people are in town. The principal events were the formal turning on of the waterworks, the annual flower show, and a sham fight, in which the Ashburt n, Temnka, and Timaru Volunteers took part, and the annual cricket match between Timaru and Oamaru, which waa won by the former by seven wickets. The Weather.
A very heavy north-westerly gale has been blowing all day. It will tell against the crops, which have already suffered severely from the ravages of the sparrows. DUNEDIN, December 16. Flower Show. The new Horticultural Society held their first show to-day, and it was highly successful. The Tararua Relief Fund. The committee of the Tararua Relief Fund have wound up the affairs in connection therewith. The total receipts were £l7O 13s 6d, of which £IOO was from the Union Company. The following was the distribution:— Port Chalmers cages, £ll2 14« (the only oases of real want) ; Dunedin, £l4 3s 9d ; Wellington, £l2 10s; Oamaru, £7 2j ; Aucland, £6 ; Gore, £2 10s ; advertising expenses, £ls 13s 9J. Prize Firing. At the R’flo Association’s meeting to-day Volunteer Marshall won the fifth match with 64 cut of a possible 70. Volunteer Ventry, of the City Guards, won the prize for aggregates. The Ladies’ Challenge Shield was competed for by nine companies,aand won by the North Dunedin R Acs with 408 points. Clutha was second with 335 points. Corporal Hutchinson, of tho successful team, made eight consecutive bullseyes, including the sighting shot, at 400 yards. Aquatic. A four oared crow from the old Union Bowing Club here intends proceeding to Christchurch .to take part in the Lyttelton regatta.
