AMBERLBY EAOE3. Stewards—Meier* G. D. Greenwood, O. B. Btarky, O. Ensor, .A. Benn, R. B. Holdiwortb, W. H. Brown, T. MoNaught. Hon, treasurer, It. O. Williams. Judge, P. Courage. Starter, O. G. King. Handioapper, B. G. Griffith. Clerk of the course, M. B. O’Oonuoll, Clerk of scales, A. McDonald. These annual races came off yesterday on the course upon the recreation reserve, about three miles out of the township. The weather was all that could be wished, except for a breeze, which ever and anon blew the dust about. The visitors had the option of going out from the train with Mr Seaton with o four-in-hand or with a number of public vehicles which were running out to the course. Upon the ground there was a largo gathering, and, as the programme shows, there was capital _ sport for them. The arrangements were similar to those of previous years, A cement floor had been carefully laid to measure ponies on, and in order to set aside, if possible, the reference of any disputes to the Bench, the stewarda had adopted a rule that their decisions should be final, “ and such decision shall not be questioned in any court of law.” The saddling paddock was well patronised, and there were the usual run of amusements, inclusive of Hobbs and Goodwin’s pari-mutuel, a merry-go-round, which broke down, and the booths, a publican’s, under the control of Mr Staoe, and a confectioner’s, managed by Mr Franks, of Leithfield. The class of horses entered were bettor than usual. For the Handicap Hurdles, Albion, which looked very fit, was the favorite, but this race went to the credit of Young Diomedea, which went well. In the Hack Hurdle Race the stakes went to an entire outsider in a grey horse, Faugh-a-Ballagh, Pippin and Waimate Jack, the favorites, both baulking. The Oup brought out a field of six, the horses,'except The Lad, going very well. On Dit, The Joker, and Talent were the favorites at the totalisator, and the race resulted in a win for the latter. The Maiden Plate was a close race between Pippin and Rebecca. The former was protested against on the grounds that ho was not a maiden; that the disqualification of the Ellesmere Club had not been removed by the O J.G., and that he was not nominated as Pippin (late Flay Boy). The committee considered the point for some time, and decided to refer it to the 0.J.0. For the Northern Handicap, Pippin and The Joker, who only came to the start, were expected to make a good race, but the latter unfortunately fell. The Ladies’ Purse was taken easily by Talent. The Pony Race was won by Mr Glendinning's pony by about 300 yards. The races began at 12 30, and for the most part were over for the usual evening train, the committee not having thought it worth while to apply for a special Handicap Hurdle Race, of 30 eova, added to a sweepstakes of 2 sovs. Two miles and a quarter; over eight flights. Second horse to save stakes. Mr Murfit’s hr b Young Diomedea, 9at (G. Murfit) 1 Mr F. At the rails the horses took the positions— Bonser, Albion, Diomedea, and Hope. Diomedea led over the seoond hurdles, and Router baulked, but made up time in good style. Passing the public the seoond time Albion led, with Diomedes in attendance, and Rouser next, and Hope almost out of the hunt. At the sixth flight Albion hit the timber with his fore feet and came to grief, leaving Diomedes to canter in .- a smart spare being made by Hope, which gained on Eoneer and came to second place by half a length. Hack Race, of 10 sovs; post entry, catch weights ; distance, one mile ; district horses only. Young Barbarian won this event, beating seven others.
