[PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, December 13. A DeathAndrew Burns, of Korokoriki, was accidentally killed by the fall of a tree. The Suspected Burglar. Frederick Plummer has been committed for trial on a charge of sending a threatening letter to Dr. Fhilson. The Russian Men of War. The Russian Admiral states that his vessel is the only one calling here, the rest of the squadron going direct to Australia. He will probably remain a week. The Admiral intends to visit some of the Maori settlements at the Thames and Waikato, and other places of interest. NEW PLYMOUTH, December 13. Titokowaru Committed for Trial. This afternoon Titokowaru was brought up on a charge of having on the 10th of November, 1881, at a certain place within the confiscated territory mentioned in the West Coast Settlement Act, 1880, to wit, Parihaka, wilfully obstructed B. W. Hurathouse, and refused to leave there when requested to do so. Mr Hursthouse deposed that Titokowaru was only a visitor at Parihaka, and had no land there. Ho was called upon, with others, to return to his home, but refused to do so. On being arrested, he said to his people—“l thought it would come to this.” Walter Gudgeon deposed to giving Titokowaru a copy of the Governor’s proclamation at Mania, and corroborated the last witness with respect to prisoner’s arrest, Henry Charles Morrison deposed that Titokowaru was very bounceable to Europeans. Prisoner was then committed to take his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. WANGANUI, December 13. Death by Drowning. A man named William Grace was drowned this afternoon by the upsetting of a canoe. Dinner to Mr BryceA public dinner will be given to the Hon. J. Bryce on Friday evening, when 150 guests are expected to attend. Invitations will be issued to the Premier, Colonel Boberts, and to all members and ex-members of the House of Representatives from Taranaki to Foxton. HAMILTON, December 13. Election Return. The official declaration of the poll for Waipa to-day declared the majority in favour of Mr Whitaker to be 38, All the candidates were present. TIMARU, December 13. The half-yearly sessions of the Supreme Court opened to-day before Judge Johnston. The Grand Jury found true bills in every case but that against John Tait for arson. John Robins pleaded guilty to forgery and uttering, and was sentenced to one month ; Andrew Taylor, for stealing from the person, received two years J John Powell, larceny from a dwelling, received six years ; Henry Whitcomb, larceny from the person, four years; Fredk. W. Dunn, larceny from the Ship Hotel, one year. Volunteers’ Sham FightA sham fight in which all the volunteers in South Canterbury will take part, will be held at Timaru on the 16 : h. The A- & P- ShowThe eighteenth annual show of the Southland A. and P. Association was held to day, and proved a groat success. Notwithstanding that the exhibits were seventy-five fewer than last year the quality was excellent.
