NEW PLYMOUTH, November 19. 1 Municipal. Mr William Bayley has been elected Mayo r of New Plymouth unopposed. . WANGANUI, November 20. The Return Home. The Wanganui contingent, Captain Watt, and the Alexandra Cavalry, under Captain Somerville, arrived by special train from Waverley yesterday afternoon, after a weary march of thirty miles from Manaia to Patea on the previous day. There was a large turn out of the townspeople to receive the train, and the Volunteers, having been marched to the drill shed, were met by the Mayor and Borough Councillors. The Mayor read a congratulatory address, to which Captains Watt and Somerville suitably replied. Captain Watt read a letter from Major Noake, conveying to the Volunteers the thanks of the Defence Minister and Government for their services. The Volunteers wore then released from active service, and the proceedings terminated with three hearty, ringing cheers for Mr Bryce. The Marton Volunteers left for home by special train this morning. WELLINGTON, November 20. Mr Stout’s Opinion. Mr Stout has given his opinion that if the persons entitled to be registered as electors under sections 7 and 8 of the Registration Act of 1879 send in claims, the Registrar must, after fifteen days, register them, if ho thinks the statement of qualifications true, notwithstanding the writs having been issued. Chinese Gamblers. The police made a raid on a Chinese gambling house in Taranaki street lost night, and arrested about a dozen Chinamen who were found playing faatan. NELSON, November 20. Return of Volunteers. The Hinemoa arrived with the Volunteers at half-past six last night. A great crowd went down to welcome them, including the Mayor and City Councillors, Fire Brigades, Ac. The men marched up to the centre of the town, where the Town Clerk presented a congratulatory address, to which Major Pitt replied. Cheers were given for the Nelson men and the Canterbury and Marlborough corps, and Major Pitt. Eully 8000 persons were present. TIMARU, November 20. PoliticalDr. Fisher, a candidate for Gladstone, received a vote of confidence from the electors at Pleasant Point last night. Mr Clements, solicitor, is out for Waimate. Fire. Spalding’s store at Burke’s Pass, was burnt down on Friday morning. It was insured up to £350 of its value in the National and Standard Companies. It is said that the contract entered into between the Government and the West Coast Railway Company is very favorable to the latter, and that the construction of the line is now practically certain. I.hear, further, that it has already proved the means of acquiring some valuable West Coast land from the Natives, who are exceedingly anxious to see the line made as benefitting their property in that locality.
