[By Tblegeaph.] [Per 8.8. Hero at Auckland.} LONDON, October 12. Edward Trickett, the Australian champion, has oha'lenged Han’an to row for the championship of the world and £i"o aside. Hanlan has accepted the challenge, and the proposed contest takes place at St. Louis on November 22nd. Another phase of revivalism is apparent is in England. Messrs Mcody and Sankey have appeared at Newcastle-on-Tjne to very large audiences, and the preaching of the one and singing and playing of the other have caused great religious excitement. _ A question has ailsen in respect to the visitation of the English ironclads at Alexandra. The Minister for Foreign Affairs assured the Khedive that the event possesses no political significance whatever. The statement has caused some surprise, as it was thought that the circumstance was connected with a determination to assist the Khedive in maintaining order.
A good deal of excitement and much variel surmise has been provoked by the circumstance which has just come to light of a secret visit paid by M. Gambetta to Prince Bismarck. There is much speculation us to the probable object of the meeting. October 13. A very destructive fire occurred at Now York yesterday. Two hundred houses, more or less, were destroyed before the progress of the conflagration was checked. The Queen has invested King Alphonao, of Spain, with the Order of the Garter. Mr John Dillon has been addressing his constituents, his principal topic being Mr Glad stone’s speech at Leeds. Mr Dillon abused the Premier in strong terms. A meeting has been held at Forfar to devise means for alleviating the agricultural depression of the district. A Bombay trader foundered off Lisbon. Only seven persons escaped. At Newmarket races the Middle Plate of 500 sovs resulted as follows :—Lord Rosebery’s Kermes»e, 1; P. Lorillard’s Gerald, 2 ; Saint Margaret, 3, October 14. Prince Albert Victor, the eldest eon of the Prince of Wales, will shortly receive hia commission for the army. About half the meat shipped from Australia by the steamship Orient has been sold. The opening prices were well maintained. The remainder of the meat has been warehoused at London Docks.
The Eev. Fathers Sheehy and Fgan, who havo taken a prominent part in connection with the Laud League of Ireland, havo become alarmed at the firm attitude recently displayed by the Government, and have fled from the country. The postmaster who was lately a witness for the Crown at the trial at Longford in Ireland has been shot.
