Criminal. At the Supreme Court the jury found a verdict of not guilty in the case of Sodritzry, charged with rape on a Maori woman. The Judge said the prisoner shju'd never have been committed. The case against Stehr for embezzlement is now going on. OPUNAKE, October 7. The Native AspectMr Rolleston at Pungarehu has everything in readiness for an expeditionary move ment. The Natives m great numbers are still holding the disputed lands. The course of events will be known when the fences are pulled down. The Natives keep strict watch on the Constabulary's movement. Tho distance of all the commanding positions around Pungarehu are ascertained. HAWERA, October T. More ploughing is reported from Otakeho, but it is said to be on the former reserves which had not been sold. The volunteer corps are drilling nightly throughout the district. The land sale is attracting buyers. Political. Mr Hutchinson had a well attended meeting last night, when votes of confidence and thanks were proposed, and the former was carried. DUNEDIN, October 7. Shipping. The Cuzco sailed from Plymouth on October 3rd, with 376 passengers. Supposed Suicide. John Prioe is supposed to have committed suicide on Sunday evening by jumping off a punt at Alberton into the Clarence River. Important DecisionA case of some importance to Building Societies has been decided by Mr Simpson, who delivered judgment in the Permanent Building Sooiety v Rose, nonsuiting the plaintiffs. His Worship stated his opinion with regard to the first item claimed, viz., that the defendant should refund the profits credite.l to him during the year 1879 80. That amount, he said, was not recoverable, being based upon opinions and calculations admitted to be only approximately correct. The second item claimed was not, his Worship considered, ascertained to be in proportion to the defi cienoy for whioh defendant would be liable, and the balance-sheet upon which the claim was made had not been audited in terms of the regulations, and could thus in no way be binding upon the defendant. Attempted Suicide.
At the City Court this morning, William Alexander was ehargod with attempting suicide by taking laudanum. Acoused said he took it for medioal purposes. The Bonch bound him over in one surety of £SO, and ordered the insertion in tbe newspapers of a notice cautioning publicans ogainat supplying him with drink.
