THE RAILWAY STRIKE

We have been requested by the Hon. E. I Richardson to publish the following letter received by him from the Premier, whioh will explain why Mr Richardson will be unable to accompany the deputation appointed by the [ men on strike to interview the Hon. John Hall on Monday next: Christchurch, Ootober6th, 1881. Sir,—l am icstructed by Mr Hall to state, with reference to the conversation you held with him yesterday, that ho will be ready to receive a deputation from the men who have lately left the Government workshops at Addington on Monday next, at 11 a.m., at the Solwyn County Council Chambers in Hereford street.

As regards, however, the intention conveyed I to Mr Hall of the wish of Mr Andrews, M.H.K., ; yourself, and other gentlemen to accompany the deputation, Mr Hall desires me to eay that he thinks such a proceeding would be unnecessary and undesirable. Ab head of the Public Works Department ho will bo ready to consider any complaints from members of the etaff, bat he believes you will agree with him that it is undesirable to introduce into such a question, especially at the present time, anything that can be supposed to savour of political influence.

Mr Hall will be obliged if you will communicate this information to the gentlemen who proposed to accompany you. I have the honor to be, Sir, Tour obedient servant, (Signed) Amelibtjs M. Smith. The Hon. Edward Richardson, C.M.G.
