Over the Walker-Whiskey prizes, Laycock, in referring to rumors, said it grieved him to bear that several gentlemen for whom ho had the highest respect should have been eo far mistaken aa to give expression to the opinion that his rowing was not honest. If they had known his actual condition, he felt sure they would have given him their sjmpathy. Some days prior to the race he bad been unwell, and at one time resolved to pay tho forfeit to Rush ; bnt he recovered a little, and believed he was good enough to win. The result proved different, and his friends lost heavily on the race. MELBOURNE, September 17. During the bustle on the arrival of the Victorian, the detectives arrested a cabman named O’Brien in the act of removing passengers’ luggage from the steamer. O'Brien broke from the detectives and jumped into the river. Ihe second mate and atewrrd leaped in after him and brought him ashore. On searching O’Brien’s premises, several hundred pounds worth of luggage was discovered. A meteor of extraordinary size and brilliancy shot over the city from the zenith due west. The streets were lighted up as by electric light. Dr. Quill, president of the Central Board of Health, stated at a meeting of the Victorian Branch of the British Medical Association that in the event of an outbreak of sma’lpox in Victoria tho Government had arranged for the revaccination of the entire Victorian population at the expense of the State At a meeting of the Medical Association opinions were expressed and endorsed by the meeting that the quarantine system in Sydney was a mistake. The Nelson from China via Brisbane to Sydney was detained in quarantine, but allowed to proceed after the vaccination of several of the crew. The vessel had a clean bill of health.
