RANGIOEA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of this Council was held on Friday last. Present—The Mayor (Mr Johnston), Councillors Ivory, Ellis, Stephens, White, and Gulliver. Messrs Boyd, Good, and Orothers, the retiring members, having been duly re-eleoted, made the usual declaration and took their seats. An apology from Or. Burt for absence was received and accepted. Correspondence was received from Mr J. Lawlor, re drainage, which was not entertained. —From Sydenham Borough Council, for information as to letting reserves.—From the Charitable Aid Board, with usual statement and cheque for distribution.—From the Colonial Secretary, asking fpr returna re endowments, &o. The returns had been sent. —From the Treasury, re fines, «Src., for month of June.—From the Collector of Customs, intimating payment of license fee (£4O) tojcredit of account at the Union Bank.—From the Chief Surveyor, as to marked boundaries of reserve at Methven. —From the Chairman Mandeville and Rangiora Road Board, in reply as to keeping town belts in repair.—From the secretary of the Rangiora Fire Brigade, applying for the usual grant. This waa, after discussion, fixed to bo £25 annually.—The surveyor’s report was read and considered.—Or. Ivory proposed, Cr. White seconded, and it was carried ; ‘‘That after due notice all rates unpaid on Ist October be recovered at law.” —The lessee of the borough reserve having complied with conditions of the lease, the question of considering any allowance for loss through boundaries remaining undefined was postponed, pending a formal application.— The clerk was instructed to recover arrears of rent due by late lessee, also to give notice to prevent the cutting of grips across footpaths in the borough for drainage purposes.—A balance of Mr Andrews’ donation remaining on hand, it was resolved to supplement the same if needful to the extent of £3O in forming footpaths and drives in Maria Andrews Park.—lt was resolved to send list to the Charitable Aid Board of those requiring a continuance of help.—The question of drainage in Ivory street was introduced by Or. Boyd, and the surveyor instructed to see to it; also the opening up of street continuing School street, one chain wide.—Resolved to offer Mr Fulton £SO for land to form this road.—Ors. Ivory, Stephens, and Gulliver were appointed members of the works committee, and the Mayor and Ors. Good and Boyd members of the finance and charitable aid committee. —The question of using the Council Chambers for public meetings was discussed at length, and the judgment of the Mayor and his action in the matter approved. —Or. Stephens’ notice of motion was brought forward and carried —“ That a by-law be
made compelling persons to trim their gorse hedges, and also to remove obstructions to drains opposite their premises.”—The Council then adjourned.
