CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, Sbptbmbbb 12. [Before J. Ollivier and R. Westenra, J.P.’s.] Dbuhkennebs. —John Parker was fined 10s or forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. For a first offence a man was fined 5s or twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. Soliciting Alms.—Thos. Gallon, alias Dillon, alios Maurice O’Connor, alias Gillen, was brought up charged with this offence. Detective Neil stated that he noticed prisoner, who is a strapping fellow, stop two children in the street on Sunday; he took an orange from one of them, and ate the half of it. He then went down the street and slipped into a backyard, belonging to a house where the officer found he had been begging in the character of a discharged hospital patient, who had only just recovered from the effects of a broken leg. Prisoner was woll known as a loafer. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor. Obtaining Goods on False Pbbtbnces. —Ohas. Ryland, on remand from Ashburton, was brought up charged as above. The police stated that there wore likely to be a number of cases against the prisoner, and asked for a remand. He was remanded accordingly, to appear at Ashburton on the 19th inst. Pbotecxion Obdbb.—An order was made granting protection to the earnings of Jane Biyth, and giving her charge of one child, as against her husband, on the ground of his cruelty and habitual drunkenness ; ho being also ordered to pay 30j per week as maintenance for his wife and child. Miscellaneous. David Qallatly, for allowing a horse to wander at large, was fined 10s and costs. —Margaret Smith, J. W. Crabtree, and Thos. Brawley, for having in their possession unregistered dogs, wore each fined 20s, with costs. —A case against A. Campbell, for tethering a horse on a road, was dismissed. —Wm, Pearson, for allowing a cow to wander, was fined 5s and costs. —James Williams, for driving two drays at once, one hitched on the back board of tho other, was fined 5s and costa. —John Ross, a very small boy, was charged with breaking a window at the Normal School, where ho is a scholar, tho Bench cautioning him and dismissing the case.—Maria Teresa Smith, a resident of Queen street, for using obscene and abusive language to a neighbor, was fined 40a, or go to gaol for seven days.—A similar charge against Neil McPhoe, for using threatening language to his wife, Mary, was dismissed.
